Preview: Olivier Giroud’s sixth Champions League goal of 2020/21 means Chelsea hold a fragile 1-0 aggregate lead in their last-sixteen tie with Atletico Madrid. Can the La Liga leaders turn it around over in England at Stamford Bridge?

Chelsea – Giroud can continue Spanish goal glut?

The Blues are still to suffer a competitive defeat under Thomas Tuchel, whose twelve matches at the helm since replacing Frank Lampard in November have so far garnered eight victories and seen only two goals conceded. Saturday’s goalless draw at Elland Road against Leeds United may have felt disappointing at the time, however, in doing so they recorded a tenth clean sheet under the German’s watch.

Were they to register another shutout on Wednesday, Chelsea will find themselves in Friday’s draw for the quarter-finals – and having kept their opponents at arms length first time around, they must surely be confident of progression. Goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy had very little to do three weeks ago but continues to be a safe pair of hands between the sticks, boasting the most clean sheets in the competition (5).

Tuchel will hope his team can make the task all the more easier by scoring at Stamford Bridge. That would see Atletico needing to score twice, something no side has managed against this miserly Chelsea defence since his appointment. The most likely source of goals would be Olivier Giroud, whose six in the Champions League this term are twice that of any other team-mate (Timo Werner next best on three).

Atletico Madrid – Los Rojiblancos looking light on goals?

La Liga leaders Atletico Madrid were unable capitalise on ‘home advantage’ in the first leg, failing to register a single attempt on target – their opponents managed five – in a tepid display out in Bucharest. Diego Simeone will demand more in England, but whether his charges can land a meaningful blow, on quite possibly the leanest rearguard in Europe at this precise moment, feels unlikely based on that evidence.

The Spanish side would score three times on their visit to England at this same stage last season, though. The difference then, however, was they held a 1-0 lead over Liverpool from the first leg. They were also beaten to nil inside 90 minutes at Anfield before somehow finding three in extra-time, largely due to some questionable goalkeeping, to seal a 3-2 win on the night and thus progress 4-2 on aggregate.

Atletico require at least one goal at Stamford Bridge, that much is clear. Yet this is now a team with seven goals from as many Champions League games this season, could only beat Austrian side Salzburg during the group phase, and whose momentum domestically has stuttered recently. Saturday’s goalless draw at Getafe leaving them on three wins in their past nine competitive matches.

Chelsea Vs Atletico Madrid Betting Advice

Whereas Chelsea cruised through the group stage without losing a game (W4 D2), it was unconvincing throughout from Atletico Madrid (W2 D3 L1) who could only beat Austrian side Salzburg, against whom five of their seven goals in the competition were scored. Joao Felix scored past a much changed Bayern, who were already through, but they struggled on the whole and were completely nullified in the first leg.

Chelsea Vs Atletico Madrid – Key Facts:

  • The head-to-head between the clubs signifies very little between them: Chelsea marginally ahead (W3 D3 L2) courtesy of that first-leg 1-0 victory in Bucharest three weeks ago.
  • Since the appointment of Thomas Tuchel as manager, Chelsea are 12 games without defeat (W8 D4), have conceded only twice, and recorded ten clean sheets.
  • Three wins in nine games (D4 L2) for Atletico Madrid, who only managed to beat one of their three opponents during the group stage: Austrian champions Salzburg.

A 1-0 aggregate lead is vulnerable. Chelsea, who restricted their opponents to zero shots on target in the ‘away leg’, and who have conceded only twice while losing none of their twelve competitive matches under a manager who guided PSG to their first ever final last term, are better equipped than most though. The visitors have to come out of their shell more too, suiting the fleet-footed quick attackers of the hosts.
