Preview: In the past week, Chelsea emphatically returned to winning ways in the league whilst also progressing to the semi-finals and final of the Champions League and FA Cup, respectively. Can Thomas Tuchel’s upwardly-mobile team maintain this momentum when Brighton, a favoured opponent of theirs, visit Stamford Bridge?

Chelsea – Blues tend to make light work of this fixture?

Three days on from booking their place in another FA Cup final – what will be their fourth in five seasons – and Chelsea (W15 D9 L7) are thrust back into action, this time will the sole aim of reclaiming fourth place in the Premier League. The Blues were magnificent on Saturday as they successfully derailed Manchester City’s bid for an unprecedented quadruple of major honours, but attentions swiftly turn to matters in the league.

Following West Ham’s slip up in Newcastle over the weekend, Chelsea can return to the top four with victory over Brighton, against whom they have won six of seven league meetings since the latter’s first Premier League season in 2017/18. The Blues boast a perfect record in this fixture at Stamford Bridge, meanwhile, winning all three such encounters by at least two goals and without conceding.

Another ‘win to nil’ will certainly prove popular. Since Thomas Tuchel’s first game in charge in January, no team across Europe’s top five leagues has recorded more clean sheets than Chelsea (14). Seven were in the league. They went close to another in last week’s 4-1 league win away to Crystal Palace that went some way to atoning for the shambolic defending in the 5-2 loss to West Brom last time out at home.

Brighton – Potter’s men prefer the road?

Graham Potter was left to rue another missed opportunity after last week’s goalless draw with Everton, who were without their leading goalscorer and offered scant little threat going forward at The Amex. As such, the Brighton (W7 D12 L12) goal was rarely troubled, comfortably recording a fifth clean sheet in eight Premier League home games since the turn of the year – with no team keeping more in 2021.

The Seagulls’ goal hasn’t lived such a charmed life on the road, however, conceding at least once in each of the last four away league games (W1 D1 L2). Albeit the last of those was at Old Trafford where they went down fighting to second-place Man Utd who, as they often do, fought back to win 2-1. That result continued a trend which has seen each of Brighton’s last six defeats in the league come by a single goal.

However, Chelsea were one of three teams (Everton & Leicester the others) to beat Potter’s men by more than a single-goal margin. That in a 3-1 scoreline on the opening day of the season. We can usually rely on a competitive showing from this team then, in particular away from home. Five out of seven league wins in 2020-21 were on the road, including at Leeds, Liverpool and Southampton since the turn of the year.

Chelsea Vs Brighton Betting Advice

Chelsea, playing their fourth match in ten days, can take enormous satisfaction from progressing in Europe and the FA Cup recently. There is an argument those exertions could catch up to them though. Tuesday’s opponents also boast prior for keeping the scoring down when facing the better sides on their patch – Brighton conceding a combined three times away to Liverpool and both Manchester clubs.

Chelsea Vs Brighton – Key Facts:

  • This will be the eighth time Brighton are facing Chelsea in the Premier League – the Seagulls having lost six of seven prior meetings (D1), five of these being ‘to nil’.
  • Under 2.5 Goals has landed in five of the past six Chelsea home Premier League games, and in four of Brighton’s last six away from home.
  • Last time out at Stamford Bridge, second from bottom West Brom became the visiting side to score against Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea in six home league games.

Brighton’s last two away league games may have featured precisely three goals but the five before that all comfortably went Under 2.5 Goals, a bet that would have landed in all five Chelsea home Premier League games prior to their shock 5-2 defeat last time out at Stamford Bridge to West Brom. That was an anomaly, though, and we expect business to resume for Tuchel’s miserly rearguard.
