Preview: Thomas Tuchel goes in search of his first victory as the new Chelsea boss after settling for a goalless draw on his Premier League bow earlier in the week. However, this resurgent Burnley side, boasting successive league wins for the first time all season, are set to provide the German with plenty of resistance at Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea – Tuchel easing himself into Stamford Bridge role?

Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in West London as Chelsea (W8 D6 L6) manager, replacing previous incumbent Frank Lampard, has naturally been one of the week’s biggest talking points, but his opening game on the touchline passed by without much fuss as his new team ambled their way to a goalless draw with an out-of-sorts Wolves. A point which does neither their league position or dismal run of form any favours.

Chelsea remain five points adrift of the Champions League places and 11 behind leaders Man City, who also have a game in hand. But perhaps most worrying of all will be the sight of the Blues’ recent results. Wednesday’s dour stalemate at Stamford Bridge meaning they have won only once in six league outings (W1 D2 L3) – with that rare success a slender win at local rivals Fulham, who were down to ten men.

A big problem of late has been putting the ball in to the back of the net. Chelsea have now scored four times in their last six league games, last netting more than once in a comfortable 3-0 victory at home to West Ham on 21 December. The latter have since overtaken Tuchel’s new charges, highlighting the marked decline of a team who were once at the head of the pack in early December.

Burnley – Clarets boasting momentum in abundance?

Having already performed one minor miracle when winning away at the reigning Premier League champions, becoming the first visiting team to win a league match at Anfield since April 2017, Burnley (W6 D4 L9) were at it again on Wednesday, clawing back not one but two losing deficits to claim an unlikely three points. The Clarets have now won back-to-back league games for the first time this season.

The 3-2 scoreline at Turf Moor on Wednesday also represented a third win in as many matches for Sean Dyche’s side, who also progressed onto the fourth round of the FA Cup with a 3-0 victory over Fulham at Craven Cottage last weekend. They’ve also scored seven times across their past three competitive matches, as many as they had in their previous ten, with signs this team are finding their groove in attack.

Meanwhile, the Villa win was the first time Burnley had won a league game in which five or more goals were scored since another 3-2 win in August 2017. That was at Chelsea, who were also defending champions at the time. The Lancashire outfit fear no-one, and certainly shouldn’t on current form, though since that aforementioned victory here in London the Clarets have lost all but one of six subsequent meetings.

Chelsea Vs Burnley Betting Advice

Thomas Tuchel wasted little time making the big decisions, demoting several who appeared automatic starters to the bench for his first game, a dour goalless affair with Wolves in which Chelsea dominated possession but struggled to create. That could be an ominous display what with in-form Burnley up next, who prior to their 3-2 scoreline in midweek had seen five league games in a row finish 1-0 (W2 L3).

Chelsea Vs Burnley – Key Facts:

  • Following the midweek goalless draw with Wolves here at Stamford Bridge, Chelsea have now won one of their last six Premier League matches (W1 D2 L3), scoring only four goals.
  • Burnley have won back-to-back Premier League games for the first time this season, stunning Liverpool at Anfield before battling back to beat Aston Villa on Wednesday.
  • Since a 3-2 win at Stamford Bridge in August 2017, Burnley have taken only one of a possible 18 points in games versus Chelsea (D1 L5).

Last season Chelsea did the double over Burnley, racking up seven goals in the process as they won 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. They repeated that scoreline earlier in the season, at Turf Moor in October. However, these teams have tread in opposite directions ever since, with the Clarets currently resurgent. Furthermore, Chelsea have netted one goal or fewer in eight of their last nine league games, suggesting resolute Burnley, with seven goals conceded in their last ten league games, can keep this close.
