Chelsea – Blues leading from the back?

And then there were three. Unbeaten teams, that is. Along with Liverpool and Manchester United, Chelsea are still to lose a league game this season after taking their tally to four wins and a draw following last week’s emphatic 3-0 victory away to Tottenham. Each of those wins has seen them bank a clean sheet in the process, keeping 15 in just 24 top-flight fixtures since Thomas Tuchel took charge.

Liverpool are so far the only team to have scored past them. Defending Premier League champions Man City are certainly capable of doing so, but so too is this formidable rearguard of the European champions which has nullified Pep Guardiola’s charges in two of the last three meetings between the sides. Chelsea prevailed in each of those encounters, all in different competitions, implying they hold all the aces.

All four league victories thus far were by a two-goal or greater margin. But if that isn’t impressive enough, their twelve goals have come from ten different goalscorers with only Romelu Lukaku scoring multiple times. It has been a superb team effort right across the pitch. Stamford Bridge has seen back-to-back 3-0 scorelines this season, against Aston Villa and Crystal Palace. A third would be a serious statement of intent.

Manchester City – Onus on Pep to avoid unwanted record?

Never before in his trophy-laden managerial career has Pep Guardiola lost to the same opponent four times in a row. The Spaniard will be determined to avoid setting an unwanted record this weekend, having seen his Man City team lose in the league, the FA Cup and Champions League towards the end of 2020-21. Though City would win here in the league in January, Kevin De Bruyne inspiring a 3-1 win.

The Belgian midfielder scored for the third league game running on that occasion, doing so the last twice here in London. City cruised to victory in the last of those. But this was before the arrival of Thomas Tuchel who has transformed the Blues into the all conquering outfit we see before us. Yet it is interesting to note that against no other club has Guardiola incurred more losses (8) than he has Chelsea.

So you sense there is a considerable amount more riding on the result of this fixture than normal. Even more so bearing in the start they’ve made, having already dropped five points. Drawing 0-0 at home to Southampton last time out in the league before taking some frustration out on Wycombe Wanderers in the cup. Three points here, though, would see them move level with Chelsea at the top of the division.

Chelsea Vs Manchester City Betting Advice

Although they are not favourites with bookmakers, some are firm in their belief that Chelsea are the team to beat in the Premier League this season. Victory on Saturday against the actual favourites would only reinforce many people’s assertions, marking what would be their fourth consecutively against Pep Guardiola and Man City. If their recent encounters are anything to go by, this could be extremely tight.

Chelsea Vs Manchester City – Key Facts:

  • A win for Chelsea would see them become the first team to ever record four consecutive victories over a side managed by Pep Guardiola.
  • There hasn’t been a draw in any of the past 12 Premier League meetings. Yet with two goals conceded in their ten combined league games this season, this should be close.
  • Whereas Chelsea clearly hold the upper hand in recent meetings, the latter do retain a useful record at Stamford Bridge, winning three of the last six here in the league (L3).

Since Thomas Tuchel was appointed Chelsea manager, the Blues boast a 100% record across three meetings versus Man City. Only one of these contests witnessed more than one goal – Chelsea’s last-gasp 2-1 win at the Etihad in April, with the FA Cup semi-final and Champions League final ending 1-0 to the side from London. However, with two league goals conceded between them, separating them could prove difficult.
