Chelsea Preview – Can Chelsea record their first home victory over United in four years?

The 3-0 win away to Leicester last weekend was arguably their best performance of the season and ensured Chelsea remain three points clear at the top of the Premier League. Thomas Tuchel is one of the most demanding coaches in European football and he will still be wanting more form this squad. Chelsea come into this match having also out four goals past Juventus to book their place in the knockout stages of the Champions League – a competition they are hoping to retain.

The wins over Leicester and Juve means that the Blues have conceded just one goal in their last five games, scoring 12 goals in the process. There are clear signs that Chelsea are finding their best form heading into a very busy period.

The first 12 matches of the league campaign have been very consistent and suggest that Tuchel and his players will live up to the expectation that they are genuine title challengers this season. Current champions Manchester City are the only team to have beaten them in the league so far, with Liverpool and Burnley holding them to 1-1 draws.

Romelu Lukaku and Timo Werner both returned to the squad in midweek with the latter scoring off the bench. It remains to be seen if either starts this game or they remain in favour of Kai Havertz who has been playing through the middle in their absence.

Manchester United Preview – Do United have enough to upset their hosts?

Happiness has been in short supply at Old Trafford this season but Manchester United could at least also celebrate qualification to the knockout phase of the Champions League following a 2-0 win away to Villareal. There was still real concerns around the overall performance but it was a match they needed to win and they done so.

Whilst Ralf Rangnick is expected to take over as interim boss at the beginning of next week, it will be Carrick who is in charge of United for this game and looking to back the midweek win up with another success.

United are in eighth place coming into the game and already 12 points behind their weekend opponents. One win in their last seven league matches tells its own story and four defeats in their last meant it was impossible for Solskjaer to continue.

Cristiano Ronaldo was again the hero in the Champions League. But he’s managed only one in his last seven league games. Carrick has already made a big decision by benching Bruno Fernandes in Europe and it wouldn’t be a huge shock if there was a similar omission for this game as he knows his team will have to work extremely hard in the forward areas to get anything from this game.

Chelsea vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Only one of these clubs will be challenging for the title this season but this clash is always one worth watching. Chelsea know they have to win if they are to retain the lead at the top they had coming into the weekend. It’s all about small steps for United in this post-Solskjaer era and ahead of Rangnick joining.

Despite the current positions of the clubs it’s United that have had the upper hand in this fixture of late. They are unbeaten in their last four visits to Stamford Bridge, winning three of them.

Key Facts – Chelsea vs Manchester United Betting Tip

  • Chelsea hold a three point lead at the top of the Premier League
  • United have managed just one win in their last seven league games
  • The Blues haven’t defeated United at home since 2017

It’s not a record I see continuing here, though. Chelsea are just too powerful at the moment. Although it was a win in midweek, the performance was much the same for United. Back the leaders to get another three points.
