Chelsea Preview – Can Lampard’s erratic Blues be trusted?

Had Frank Lampard been offered a two-point cushion in fourth at the start of the season, I am sure he would have gleefully accepted. That is the situation as it stands, with their current odds of 4/7 (Betway) in the Top Four betting the shortest outside the top three, who all look set in stone. However, those odds are substantially bigger than what they once were, as bookmakers and punters begin to lose faith in a side that has won four of its last thirteen Premier League matches (W4 D3 L6).

If any team was in need of some momentary respite then, it was Chelsea (4th – W12 D5 L8). The last game prior to the winter break a 2-2 draw away to Leicester, in which Antonio Rudiger scored both his team’s goals from his head. Not the worst outcome on the face of it, against the team eight points better off in third. That a 1-0 loss at Newcastle and another 2-2 scoreline, this time at home to Arsenal, preceded it does, however, mean The Blues are now enduring their longest winless run of the season (3 games).

It is a small drought compared to their rivals, whose own inadequacies are helping to keep Lampard’s men in the top four despite their struggles. None more so has this been in evidence than at Stamford Bridge, where performances over the last couple months have been erratic. Wins over Aston Villa (2-1) and Burnley (3-0) were to be expected, however, losing to Bournemouth (0-1), Southampton (0-2) and West Ham (0-1) caught everyone by surprise, as their form across the last six home games reads W2 D1 L3.

Manchester United Preview – All or Nothing for Red Devils?

Two weeks without hearing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer try to spin another dreadful performance into something resembling a morale victory is, quite simply, too long. It has been comedy gold for neutrals. Not so much for the supporters, though, who have endured listless football of late and are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of accountability coming from the manager. Expect Mauricio Pochettino’s name to crop up often between now and the end of the season.

In the meantime, Ole must somehow salvage a top four bid that is beginning to look forlorn. Since the start of January, Man Utd (8th – W9 D8 L8) have featured on five occasions in the league, winning only once – a 4-0 victory over rock-bottom Norwich at Old Trafford – whilst also losing to Arsenal, Burnley and Liverpool (all 2-0 scorelines). Meanwhile, a goalless draw at home with Wolves immediately prior to the recent break made it four games in five without so much as a goal scored.

Clearly the loss of Marcus Rashford is being keenly felt. These are desperately worrying times, though, reflected in 8/1 odds on them finishing inside the Champions League places. Lose on Sunday and they would effectively drop out of contention altogether, leaving them nine points adrift of Chelsea. Victory would move them to within three, although for that to occur they would need to secure only a fourth win away from home all season (W3 D3 L6) – this from a side that has lost three of the last four away encounters to nil.

Chelsea Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

It is a must not lose game for Chelsea, whereas Man Utd simply have to win. Unless the latter emerge from the winter break transformed from the team that entered it with one win in five (W1 D1 L3), I don’t see how the visitors depart South London with maximum points. Then again, the home side have themselves stagnated. The difference being that Lampard’s men are still offering a threat going forward, albeit not to the same extent as earlier in the campaign.

Chelsea Vs Manchester United – Key Facts

  • Chelsea have a modest record at home in league games this season (W5 D4 L3) – four of their victories, however, were without conceding.
  • Manchester United have won a third of their nine away matches thus far (W3 D3 L6) – all six losses, meanwhile, were ‘to nil’.
  • Across the last five meetings in league and cups, Man Utd went unbeaten with three wins and two draws, and did depart Stamford Bridge 2-1 victors in the EFL Cup in October.

Some of the underlying numbers behind Chelsea’s defending has, surprisingly, been very impressive. Therefore, a United attack which failed to net in four of their previous five league encounters could struggle once again. The Blues are the third-best team in the top-flight this season, according to Expected Goals, and I suspect this could be reflected out on the pitch on Sunday. All six of United’s defeats on the road were to nil, meanwhile.
