English Premier League
Pick: Chelsea to win by 1 Goal (Winning Margin)
Odds: 12/5

(All betting odds correct at time of writing: 5th November 2020)

Preview: A fourth league win of the season will be enough for Chelsea to move into the Premier League’s top four, and they will hope to do so at the expense of a Sheffield United team which has lost all but one top-flight fixture so far this term. The hosts should take nothing for granted, though, relinquishing a 2-0 lead to draw this fixture 2-2 in 2019-20.

Chelsea Preview – Blues primed to go six unbeaten in league?

Following an indifferent start to the campaign, when unable to secure a win in six of their first nine encounters across all competitions, Frank Lampard’s side have now reeled off three wins on the spin whilst keeping a clean sheet in each of the last five. All of a sudden The Blues appear a well-oiled machine, which is ominous ahead of them hosting a Sheffield United team still searching for their first win of 2020-21.

Wednesday’s game with French outfit Rennes was cruise control for Chelsea, who dominated proceedings in much the same way they did away at Russian side Krasnodar and Burnley in the Premier League recently. Meanwhile they have now clocked more than 450 minutes without managing to concede, all with Edouard Mendy guarding the goal, since a 3-3 draw at home to Southampton in October.

In the league, Chelsea are now up into seventh (W3 D3 L1) after comfortably dispatching Burnley 3-0 at Turf Moor last time out. Goals from Hakim Ziyech, Kurt Zouma and Timo Werner helping to extend the team’s unbeaten run in the league to five (W2 D3), their longest such streak since last November. Frank Lampard has lost Kai Havertz for this weekend, though, with the German international currently in self-isolation.

Sheffield United – Last season’s display in West London provides hope?

Second season syndrome appears to have claimed its latest victim in the shape of Sheffield United. Promoted as runners-up in the Championship in 2018-19, The Blades would go on to finish in the top half of the Premier League last term as they garnered a 37 per cent win ratio under the tutelage of Chris Wilder. This season, though, that winning percentage of theirs stands at a round zero.

Seven games into the new season and Chris Wilder is still looking for his team’s first win (D1 L6), claiming one of the last 30 points when taking into account the three successive defeats sustained towards the end of last term. However, all but one of the opposition thus far reside in the top half of the table, meaning it hasn’t been the most straightforward of beginnings for last season’s ninth-placed side.

The Blades would avoid defeat home and away against Chelsea last time around meanwhile, coming from 2-0 down to earn a 2-2 draw at Stamford Bridge before thrashing The Blues 3-0 at Bramall Lane during Project Restart. They arguably deserved more from their trip to Arsenal (2-1) this season, and maybe even Liverpool (2-1), and merit credit for limiting Man City to only a 1-0 scoreline last weekend.

Chelsea Vs Sheffield United Betting Advice

Frank Lampard will know all about the threat posed by Sheffield United having been frustrated by The Blades twice last season. If surrendering a 2-0 lead to draw 2-2 at Stamford Bridge wasn’t galling enough, in the second half of the season they were completely blown away in the reverse fixture, losing 3-0 at Bramall Lane. On current form, though, it is difficult seeing anything other than another win for Chelsea.

Chelsea Vs Sheffield United – Key Facts:

  • Edouard Mendy has kept clean sheets in each of his three league appearances for Chelsea, helping his team collect seven points from a possible nine.
  • Not since 1990 have Sheffield United failed to win any of their opening eight league games, an unwanted feat they stand on the cusp of this weekend (D1 L6).
  • Last season seen Sheffield United avoid defeat home and away against Chelsea, winning 3-0 at home and earning a come-from-behind 2-2 draw in West London.

Three straight victories in all competitions, scoring ten times without so much as conceding once themselves, is a sign that Chelsea are approaching their best form of the season so far. They should have too much for Sheffield United who have lost six of their seven league matches thus far but who are seldom well-beaten, losing by a single goal against Arsenal, Liverpool and Man City already this season.
