Preview: Three points at Stamford Bridge would further enhance the burgeoning title prospects of either side on Sunday. Chelsea begin as favourites, though, and will usurp their London rivals should they become only the second team in 2020/21 to register a Premier League victory over Tottenham.

Chelsea Preview – Creaky defence a thing of the past?

Some of Frank Lampard’s finest moments as a player were under the tutelage of Jose Mourinho, so the former England and Chelsea midfielder should know all about striking up a balance between attack and defence. However, it seemed like something he was incapable of grasping initially, with the 54 goals the Blues conceded in last season’s Premier League easily the worst figure of those who finished in the top half.

Since then player recruitment has improved, and, unsurprisingly, so has the consistency with which Chelsea (W5 D3 L1) are performing. Goalkeeper Eduoard Mendy is a calming presence between the sticks, much in the same way that Thiago Silva makes the defence feel at ease, and the pair have propelled the team to three clean sheets in four league games since a 3-3 draw at home to Southampton in September.

With less anxiety emanating from the back, the attackers have been able to flourish, scoring two or more in six of nine league games this season, including the last three in wins over Burnley, Sheff Utd and Newcastle. They’ve won six in a row in league and Europe meanwhile, qualifying for the Champions League knockouts with games to spare, and are now flying in the league, up into third after seven unbeaten (W4 D3).

Tottenham Preview – Mourinho reverting to familiar pragmatism?

Top of the Premier League on goal difference, only three points at Stamford Bridge, where they have won on just one occasion on their last 34 visits in all competitions (W1 D11 L22), will ensure they remain there beyond this weekend. However, after compounding the early seasons woes of Manchester City in their last league fixture, surely only the bravest dare oppose Jose Mourinho’s in-form charges on Sunday?

Having passed the acid test that naturally comes with facing Pep Guardiola and Man City, Spurs (W6 D2 L1) continue the gauntlet that is their horrendous upcoming schedule with a visit to a ground which has caused them nightmares through the years. Their form is such, though, that it is incredibly difficult to dismiss their chances, with no team enjoying a longer unbeaten run (W6 D2) or on a longer winning streak (4).

On the road, Spurs are one of three sides still boasting a 100% record. Early trips to Southampton and Man Utd only briefly troubled them before Harry Kane and Son Heung-min ran riot, while there was a more measure approach about how they secured their points away to Burnley and West Brom. A late goal apiece from the aforementioned strike pairing securing back-to-back 1-0 wins to preserve their perfect away record.

Chelsea Vs Tottenham Betting Advice

It is first against third on Sunday as Chelsea and Tottenham strive to build on their equally impressive league starts. The former are unbeaten in seven league games (W4 D3) having won each of the last three. That a run bettered only by their opponents, with Spurs now eight without defeat (W6 D2), winning each of the last four, following their gutsy effort in victory last time out against Man City.

Chelsea Vs Tottenham – Key Facts:

  • Six consecutive victories for Chelsea across all competitions, who have now conceded a single goal in 360 minutes of Premier League football.
  • Four successive league wins for Tottenham, the latest against Man City, having also conceded just one goal across their last four Premier League matches.
  • Tottenham have won only once away to Chelsea in their last 34 visits in all competitions (W1 D11 L22) – that sole success a 3-1 win in April 2018.

These teams also share something in common: both have dramatically improved their fortunes in the defensive third on the back of 3-3 scorelines. It is one goal conceded in four for Frank Lampard’s men since their 3-3 thriller with Southampton at Stamford Bridge, an identical return to Tottenham who have allowed a single goal in the aftermath of their late capitulation at home to West Ham that same weekend. Defences could well come out on top.
