Chile Preview – Can Chile continue making history and reach a third straight Copa America final?

Defending champions Chile were virtually written off as potential winners of this summer’s Copa America before the tournament kicked off. It was a big slight on a team who had won back-to-back competitions and who still contained a lot of those players. That was the argument put forward by their critics that it was an ageing squad and they would struggle to find that same level of form. Fast forward a couple of weeks and they are now on the cusp of yet another Copa America final. It’s not always been pretty to reach this stage but one thing we know about this team is they find a way to do it. That was again apparent in their quarter-final encounter with Colombia. Against a younger, more vibrant team Chile were able to stifle that.

Having won both their finals on penalties it’s no surprise to see them progress by that method once again. And they will quite happily take the same again if it means playing in Sunday’s showpiece.

Peru Preview– Are Peru capable of spring a shock to reach Sunday’s final?

Having been thumped 5-0 by Brazil in the group stage you would be forgiven for thinking it may have a lasting impact on Peru. Regardless of progressing from the group it’s not often a team can recover from such a dismantling in this sort of format. Huge credit has to go to this Peruvian team as a result as they have dug their heels in and been hugely resilient. Even in their quarter-final against Uruguay they were very much second best. Suarez and company contrived to miss a plethora of chances and ultimately paid the price when the game went to penalties. Peru done incredibly well to hold their nerve and reach the semi-final for the third in four attempts. This has traditionally been the stage they falter at, though. Have they what it takes to reach a first final since 1975?!

Key-Facts – Chile v Peru

  • Chile and Peru have both beaten more fancied opponents to get to this stage and are now one game away from Sunday’s final
  • The Chileans have won the past two Copa Americas whilst Peru last contested the final in 1975
  • This game is a repeat of the 2015 semi-final when Chile won 2-1 – it’s expected to be another very closely fought game

Chile v Peru Betting Advice

It’s fair to say this is not the semi-final many would have predicted. Colombia and Uruguay both topped their sections in the group stage but were undone by the tenacity of these two. Chile have, without a doubt, found a formula that works at this tournament. Having failed to reach last summer’s World Cup there were calls to overhaul the squad and focus on young players. That has been resisted, though, and it could well be a justified decision. Winning consecutive Copa Americas is already unprecedented for this nation – winning three would be an almighty achievement.

It’s Peru who stand in their way, and in many ways they have replicated what Chile have done. They are punching above their weight and happy to concede possession and opportunities to more fancied teams. But when they get a chance or hint of victory, they are capable of taking it.

All the evidence points to this being a very attritional game and perhaps one of the purists. With both teams set-up in a similar way we could yet see another drab Copa America knockout game. Chile have been able to cope with this in the past, however, and adjusted accordingly. This game is a repeat of the 2015 semi-final which the Chileans edged 2-1. I would be surprised if we see three goals in this match, but the outcome is expected to be the same. A narrow win for Chile who progress to their third straight final.
