Club Brugge Preview – Belgians keen to banish home Champions League woes?

Blauw-Zwart head coach Philippe Clement hopes to welcome several players back from spells in self-isolation for this second match-up in Group F. The reigning champions of Belgium’s Pro League have had to make do without a defender, a forward and their undisputed number one between the sticks in recent games. Not that it unduly impacted them on Matchday 1, scoring late to snatch a priceless 2-1 away win over Zenit.

Having Simon Mignolet back in goal is a boost for Club Brugge. United States international Ethan Horvath has deputised for the former Liverpool shot-stopper in the last two games, conceding three times, including an unfortunate own goal in last week’s win over Russian champions Zenit (xG: ZEN 2.59 – 1.80 CLB). Only the Belgian side’s second win across their previous 19 matches in the Champions League proper.

The club have never progressed from any of their seven previous group stage participations, however another set of three points here would leave them in a commanding position to do so at the eighth attempt. Their record at home is underwhelming, though, failing to win a Champions League group stage fixture on their turf since a 3-2 defeat of Austrian outfit Rapid Vienna in 2005 (D4 L6 thereafter).

Lazio Preview – Immobile to inspire Biancocelesti to Belgium spoils?

Every now and then there is an inevitability about what transpires out on the pitch. So when Ciro Immobile opened the scoring six minutes into facing his former employer on Matchday 1, in turn lighting the touchpaper for his side to go and record only their third win in eleven European games (W3 L8), to some it will have come as little surprise. A 3-1 triumph at home to Borussia Dortmund setting them up nicely in Group F.

The Biancocelesti rode their luck on occasion at the Stadio Olimpico a week ago, while there appeared a nervy finish on the cards when Erling Haaland emphatically reduced the arrears for the German side midway through the second period. Few, however, could seriously put forth case as to why last season’s fourth-placed side in Italy’s Serie A weren’t deserving of their victory (xG: LAZ 1.78 – 1.53 DOR).

It hasn’t been the best of starts to the season, though, from Simone Inzaghi’s men. In fact prior to beating Bologna 2-1 at home over the weekend, Lazio were winless in three (D1 L2) having registered just four out of a possible twelve points to reside in the lower half of the Serie A table. All of a sudden, following quick-fire back-to-back victories, confidence has seemingly been restored with Immobile on target in both recent successes.

Club Brugge Vs Lazio Betting Advice

In theory, neither will be short on confidence following opening day victories. Unfortunately, these are two of the more streaky and inconsistent outfits around. Club Brugge winning only twice in their last 19 group games in the Champions League (W2 D6 L11) and none of the last ten as hosts (D4 L6), while Lazio have avoided defeat only three times in their past eleven European contests (W3 L8).

Club Brugge Vs Lazio – Key Facts

  • Currently second in Belgium’s Pro League, Club Brugge have lost only twice across their previous eleven European home games (W3 D6 L2).
  • A lowly 12th in Italy’s Serie A, Lazio are striving to avoid a sixth consecutive away defeat in Europe having avoided defeat once in eight prior away European matches (W1 L7).
  • These clubs are meeting for the first time. Club Brugge are without a win in nine versus Italian opposition (D2 L7) whereas Lazio were defeated on each of their most recent two visits to Belgium.

I feel there are goals in this. Club Brugge have kept only two clean sheets so far across eleven fixtures in league and Europe, conceding at least once in four of five matches (W3 L2) staged at their Jan Breydel Stadion. Meanwhile Lazio’s attack needs no introduction; scoring in all but one of six competitive games in 2020-21, the Italians boast the most prolific striker in Europe last term, 36-goal Ciro Immobile.
