Clyde – Can Clyde extend lead over opponents and give themselves a boost ahead of their Scottish Cup tie?

Danny Lennon is a veteran when it comes to management in Scotland and whilst many of his younger players will be looking ahead to Saturday and Clyde’s clash with St Johnstone in the last 16 of the Scottish Cup, he knows that this is their bread and butter.

It was another defeat for Lennon and Clyde on Tuesday, going down 2-0 away to Partick Thistle. The loss sees them remain third bottom with tomorrow’s opponents and Forfar the only teams below them. Incidentally, Clyde will complete their regular seasons against Forfar.

Defeat to Partick means Clyde have now lost nine of their 16 leagues games. Four of them have come at home and they also boast the worst home defensive record in the division, conceding 15 in their eight at Broadwood, on top of having conceded the most goals overall – it’s easy to see where the key problem has been for Lennon’s team.

Clyde do have a six point cushion over bottom spot as well as having a game in hand. Perhaps more concerning is they are just one point above Dumbarton with the chance that ninth spot still carries the prospect of a relation playoff with a team from League Two.

Dumbarton Preview – Will Dumbarton bounce back after narrow defeat to promotion-chasing Cove Rangers last time out?

Jim Duffy is no stranger to relegation battles both as a player and a coach so Dumbarton’s current position will not phase him. The Sons were narrowly beaten by second place Cove Rangers at the weekend, going down 1-0 away from home. Before that Dumbarton had taken four points from games with leaders Falkirk and East Fife, who are on the cusp of a top half finish.

Dumbarton’s form against the better teams in the league has been a constant theme throughout the season but they have been unable to pick up as many points as they would like from the teams in the bottom half.

In stark contrast to tomorrow’s opponents Dumbarton’s strength is in defence. Despite being second bottom they have conceded 14 goals fewer than Clyde and actually have the fourth best defensive record in League Two.

Unsurprisingly then, Dumbarton’s problem lies at the other end of the pitch. Duffy’s men have scored the fewest of any team in the league with only eight goals – an average of 0.5 goals per game. Four of these have come on their travels, just one of them in their last four.

Clyde vs Dumbarton Betting Advice

Although there is uncertainty around promotion and relegation playoffs in the lower leagues in Scotland neither Clyde nor Dumbarton will want to be in the hot seat of ninth should they go ahead. Their remaining two games of the regular season and five post-split fixtures will determine who finishes there.

Dumbarton can go above their opponents with a win but Clyde will be hoping to move four points clear and go into that St Johnstone cup clash in a positive frame of mind.

Key Facts – Clyde vs Dumbarton Betting Tip

  • Clyde face St Johnston in the last-16 of the Scottish Cup on Saturday but league safety is their priority
  • Dumbarton have a five point lead over bottom club Forfar with two games left of their regular season
  • These teams will face each other again when the league splits after the 18th round of games

It was Dumbarton who edged the only other meeting between the clubs this season, winning 1-0 at home back in November.

This is a game that will inevitably be cagey as virtually all of Dumbarton’s games are. Nine of Dumbarton’s last 11 games have went under 2.5 goals and the odds looking appealing for that to happen again.
