Columbus Crew – Respectfully on the slide?

Since upsetting the locals inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium in recording a slender 1-0 victory over Sunday’s opponents Atlanta United on 24 July, the Crew have lost back to back games shipping four goals each time. That is as many as this team had conceded in the ten MLS matches prior to sustaining chastening 4-1 and 4-2 losses at the hands of New York City and DC United within the space of five days.

So make no mistake about it, this is a genuine slide. Coach Caleb Porter recently spoke of his side deserving more respect. If the intention was to fire up the collective, it appears to have had the exact opposite affect on a group which has now won two of its past nine league games (D4 L3) and only one of the last four in Columbus. They were a complete shambles defensively in the midweek loss to DC United.

On the flip side, a second meeting with Atlanta United in a fortnight can only be seen as a positive from a Columbus Crew perspective. That aforementioned victory over The Five Stripes marked their fourth in as many MLS meetings. Albeit three were on the road as opposed to Lower.com Field in Columbus, Ohio where, prior to midweek, they had been unbeaten across all seven home outings (W4 D2) this season.

Atlanta United – Martinez absent keenly felt?

In the process of avoiding their third straight loss in Montreal in midweek, Atlanta United still managed to stretch their club-record barren spell in MLS to twelve matches with a come-from-behind 2-2 draw. A result which suits neither in their efforts to climb the Eastern standings. The situation is a lot more pressing for Atlanta, though, who must make do without star man Josef Martinez for the weekend.

Venezuelan Martinez has endured a turbulent 2021 to say the least. Cast aside by former coach Gabriel Heinze. The 2018 MLS MVP and Golden Boot winner had nonetheless hinted at a return to form by scoring in each of his last two games, rescuing a point at CF Montreal earlier in the week with a goal and an assist for the penalty Marcelino Moreno calmly converted for his fifth of the season.

With four goals scored in the last two games, leading twice only to lose 3-2 at Orlando City last weekend, the Five Stripes are showing a desire to go at teams that hasn’t been readily apparent for much of 2021. Defensively, however, problems still persist having conceded for the seventh game running in Montreal. Moreover, with Martinez suspended, there is greater onus on said defence holding up in Columbus.

Columbus Crew Vs Atlanta United Betting Advice

For the second time in two weeks, Columbus Crew take on this faltering Atlanta United side no doubt seeking a repeat of their 1-0 victory in Atlanta on July 24. I tipped up the draw ahead of that clash, denied a winner via a second-half set-piece goal. However, with neither pulling up trees in the immediate aftermath, backing another tightly contested encounter could well be the way to go.

Columbus Crew Vs Atlanta United – Key Facts:

  • All of the past five MLS meetings were won by Columbus Crew, with Atlanta United last securing maximum points in Ohio in a 2-0 win back in June 2018.
  • Both teams are coming off poor period defensively. Columbus Crew conceding four in each of their past two games and Atlanta United two in both their last two outings.
  • Josef Martinez will be suspended for the visitors as The Five Stripes desperately try to halt their club-record 12-game winless run.

Just the one goal was scored the last time they met but things could be different second time around. Atlanta United being without Josef Martinez obviously damages the prospects but we shouldn’t discount how poor both sides have been at the back recently. The Crew are coming off successive matches in which they conceded four times while the Five Stripes shipped two goals in their last two MLS outings.
