What a stunning performance 15-year-old Cori Gauff put together in the third round of the Australian Open 2020. She was up against the reigning champion Naomi Osaka, a player who had beaten her easily at last year’s US Open.
But Gauff turned the tables and won through in straight sets to make the fourth round of a Slam for the second time in just three appearances in the main draw. She will be an underdog in the fourth round again as she faces American compatriot Sofia Kenin.

Kenin making steady, yet quiet progress
There has been very steady progress by Sofia Kenin at the Australian Open. She has been flying under the radar a bit. But the American is ranked 14th in the world and has yet to drop a set on the way to this fourth round fixture. It was a win over Shuai Zhang in the third round of Kenin, settling the issue in straight sets via a tie break.
Like Gauff, Kenin is another of the next generation of young Americans who are on the up on the WTA. She had a career year in 2019 winning three WTA singles. This is just the third time that Kenin has been in the main draw of the Australian Open, but there has been progress from a debut first-round exit to a second-round exit last year. But she has already made the jump to the fourth round. This is her second appearance in the fourth round of a Slam, the previous one happening at the French Open last year.
Kenin lost in the second round at the Brisbane International to Naomi Osaka earlier this month but did take the first set. It was a second-round exit in Adelaide following that against Danielle Collins. Will that extra couple of years of experience in the early rounds of Slams favour Kenin in this fixture? It will be the first-ever meeting between Kenin and Gauff. Kenin does have some good aggressive traits in her attacking game, and she never stops running in chasing down defence.
Gauff continues to make headlines
Once again Cori Gauff is making headlines at a Grand Slam. For a player that only made her debut in the main draw of a Slam at Wimbledon last year, she is in the fourth round of one of the Majors for the second time in her career. It was a straight-sets victory over the reigning Australian Open champion Naomi Osaka that got her there. Gauff, who had lost to Osaka at last year’s US Open produced some amazingly composed tennis.
She had Osaka ruffled early in the match and forced the defending champion into a high error count which ultimately cost her. That was the best performance of Gauff’s Australian Open 2020 campaign so far. She did open in the first round against veteran Venus Williams, beating the player she had beaten in the first round of Wimbledon last year in what was Gauff’s first-ever Slam match. Gauff then had to show grit and character to fight back from having dropped the opening set in her second-round match against Sorana Cirstea.
