Unbeaten Palmeiras travel to face Corinthians this week, attempting to move closer to the leaders whilst the hosts can go to within a point of their opponents with a win.

Corinthians Preview – Can Corinthians pick up a second home win of the campaign?

The previous campaign was a frustrating one for Corinthians who finished in eighth place and who will have to go through qualification to make this season’s Copa Libertadores. That will be one of the objectives for Tiago Nunes who took over the head coaches role in December 2019. It’s been a decent enough start to this campaign but they know that if they are to be challenging at the top end of the table, these are games they need to be winning.

Nunes and his players will be buoyed by their last two games where Corinthians have picked up four points following a win away to Goias and then a draw at home to Botafogo. Ordinarily a share of the points against a rival below them in the table would be disappointing but an equaliser in added time is always like a winner going into the next game.

The scorer of that goal – his third of the season so far – is the enigmatic Jo. Now 33, the former Brazilian international striker is back at the club following a spell in Japan and he’s certainly making an impact.

There are definitely some positives for Corinthians to bring with them from last season, not least a very good defensive record which was amongst the best in the league. It’s not been as resolute so far this season, however, conceding 10 in just seven matches.

Palmeiras Preview – Are Palmeiras set to continue their strong start and record a first league win here since 2016?

Had it not been for the formidable Flamengo who cruised to the Serie A title last season, Palmeiras would have had a lost out on the Championship by virtue of winning one less game than second placed Santos. It’s indication of a very positive campaign but at the same time, knowing they have to build on that if they are to be successful come the end of this season.

The vastly experienced Vanderlie Luxemburgo took over the club last December and he has had an instant impact. Despite his relative success in his own career, Luxemburgo is still searching for his first Serie A title.

The Palmeiras squad has a blend of experienced players alongside some very promising youngsters. The likes of Ramires, Luiz Adriano and Felipe Melo have all enjoyed fruitful spells in Europe and are not only contributing but helping develop the potential of some of their team-mates. Midfielder Gabirel Menino is one of those and he’s started all seven league games so far.

Palmeiras are yet to lose a game this season with three wins and four draws. Two of those victories have come on their travels, too.

Corinthians vs Palmeiras Betting Advice

This is one of the biggest fixtures in Brazil and it’s already an important match in both Corinthians and Palmeiras’ season. The home team have to pick up three points to improve their league position and should they achieve that they’ll be a point behind their rivals. For the visitors, it’s all about continuing their very strong start to the season and should they win it would put them on the heels of the leaders.

The two meetings in Serie A last season ended in 1-1 draws with nothing to choose between the teams.

Key Facts – Corinthians vs Palmeiras Betting Tip

  • Corinthians are unbeaten at home so far this season, taking five point from three matches
  • Palmeiras are looking to maintain their unbeaten start to the campaign and looking for a third away win
  • Both meetings last season ended in 1-1 draws

Derby games are always competitive and this one will be no different. There’s no doubt Palmeiras are the stronger outfit at the moment but Corinthians have shown they are capable of stifling them.

Six of Corinthians seven games so far have seen both teams scoring and the same in Palmeiras games, making it look a solid selection in this one.
