Cork City’s involvement in the Champions League came to an abrupt end recently, but they revert to the Europa League on Thursday night with a first leg encounter against Rosenborg with betting tips continuing at Turner’s Cross.
The Irish outfit were dumped out of the Champions League by Polish club, Legia Warsaw, 4-0 on aggregate following a 1-0 defeat at home in the first leg and then their exit was confirmed when they suffered a heavy 3-0 loss in Warsaw in this second leg.
Last season in the Europa League, they were seen off by Cypriot side, AEK Larnaca with 1-0 defeats in both the home and away legs, but having won their last three league matches in the Irish Premier Division, the hosts will be hoping some of their league form can rub off on them in this Europa League tie.
Onto Rosenborg, and it’s a similar story for the Norwegian club as their hopes of progressing through the qualifying rounds in the Champions League were dashed by Celtic in the second qualifying round after they lost 3-1 in the first leg at Celtic Park.
That result effectively ended their hopes as the second leg finished in a dour 0-0 draw, but they have renewed hope of reaching the group stages of the Europa League again this season, starting on Thursday night in Cork.
Rosenborg finished a poor third place in last season’s Group L well behind the top two teams, Zenit and Real Sociedad, and away from home they’ve really struggled for results at this level, winning just one of their last eight on their travels.
The odds suggest Rosenborg are the favourites here, but my betting tips recommend backing Cork City with the handicap here.
