Coventry City returned to winning ways on Saturday afternoon when they grabbed all three points in a 1-0 win away at Carlisle United, and the Sky Blues have a great opportunity to register back-to-back wins when they return to their Ricoh Arena to take on struggling Chesterfield on New Years Day.
Coventry still sit in the play-off pack despite a recent 1-0 defeat away at bottom half Port Vale, and they now need to re-assert their authority on home turf where they hold a reasonable looking home record of 7-2-3 15/7 which includes just one defeat from their last five.
Six clean sheets so far this season shows that much of Coventry’s success so far has been built around a more solid defensive unit, and they come into this match having won their last two matches on home turf with victories over Cheltenham Town and Wycombe Wanderers.
Visitors Chesterfield sit just one position and one point above the relegation zone in League Two following three defeats from their last four overall, as they’ve suffered defeats to Wycombe Wanderers, Stevenage and Crewe Alexandra, although they steadied the ship with a 0-0 draw at home with Colchester on Saturday.
However, away from their Proact Stadium, the Spireites have really struggled on their travels this season which is reflected in their away record of 1-3-8 12/27 which includes just the one win on the road at Crawley Town back in October.
That win over Crawley brought them their only clean sheet away from home so far this season, and they’ll face a tough job of keeping a buoyant Coventry City at bay here today I feel.
