I had to correct myself when I looked for Coventry City in League One before writing this preview as I remembered they suffered the ignominy of relegation down to the fourth tier at the end of a very poor season.
The Sky Blues embark upon their first ever season at this level in their once proud footballing history, but they can take heart from the fact that the likes of Wolves, Swansea City, Portsmouth and Brighton have all emerged from this division eventually. Coventry have started the new campaign in impressive fashion too as they’ve recorded back-to-back wins so far.
Wins over Notts County and Grimsby Town have got the hosts off to a great start, and with manager Mark Robins at the helm, they stand a good chance of at least a play-off spot, if not automatic promotion.
Visitors Newport County have been given the rough end of the stick by the fixture computer in terms of the fixture list as they face a third consecutive away match when they make their way to the Ricoh Arena to take on Coventry City on Saturday afternoon.
Nevertheless, Newport have grabbed a point in each of their two matches to date with a 3-3 draw at Stevenage and a 1-1 draw at Crewe Alexandra, which will give them confidence that they can get something from their trip to the midlands this weekend.
However, Newport came very close to relegation at the end of last season, and The Exiles will be mindful that a better away record may well be needed this time around if they’re to avoid any last day relegation nightmares!
