The Brazilian Serie A season resumes this week following a break for the World Cup, but the top flight campaign hots up again with Cruzeiro taking on America Mineiro at the Estádio Governador Magalhães Pinto in Belo Horizonte, as the hosts look to re-start with a win here.
Cruzeiro headed into the World Cup break having ended with a three-match sequence without a win in Serie A following defeat away at Chapecoenze, with draws either side of that loss against Vasco da Gama and Parana.
However, home form has been pretty solid so far this season with an overall record of 3-1-1 5/2, as well as putting together a four match sequence without defeat prior to this match, which includes wins over Botafogo, Sport Recife and Palmeiras.
Crosstown rivals, America Mineiro, have managed just one win from their last six matches overall in the Brazilian top flight which has left them in the bottom half of the league table, occupying 14th place as a result.
That win came in a 3-1 home win over Atletico PR, but while all of their four wins have been achieved on home turf so far in this campaign, their results away from home still require a vast improvement if they’re to climb up the table and challenge for even a Copa Sudamerica spot.
An away record of 0-1-4 3/10 underlines the problems they’ve had on their travels, not only this term, but in the long run as they’re without an away win from their last 26 matches which is a staggeringly poor record indeed.
America’s last win on the road was a 2-1 win at Fluminense back in 2011, so they’ll do well to get something from this clash!
