Crystal Palace – No Zaha means no hope?

There are some teams who cope admirably in the absence of their star player. Then there is Crystal Palace (W8 D5 L1), whose Wilfried Zaha-shaped hole was again exploited last time out as the Eagles toiled without their talisman and leading scorer for the season spearheading their attacks. The culmination of which a straightforward 2-0 loss to Leeds at Elland Road that leaves them 13th in the Premier League table.

Unfortunately for manager Roy Hodgson, his team are likely to be without their main man for at least the next couple of fixtures owing to a hamstring injury picked up in a recent 2-1 win away to Newcastle. In the last 19 matches Zaha has been unavailable for, Palace have lost 17 while failing to find the back of the net in 15 of those defeats. They lost all four league games he was absent for this season.

In these ominous times, someone has to step up, and there have been signs that Eberechi Eze can be that man. The summer signing has shown glimpses of his brilliance since making the move across London from QPR, notably netting all three of his league goals so far at Selhurst Park in victories over Leeds, Sheffield Utd and Wolves. Meanwhile, Palace have only lost one of their past four home league games (W2 D1 L1).

Burnley – Clean sheet key for toothless Clarets?

Since winning back-to-back league games against Aston Villa and Liverpool in late January, Burnley (W6 D5 L11) have taken one point from nine following defeats to Chelsea and Man City before salvaging a 1-1 draw at home to Brighton last time. They would also exit the fifth round of the FA Cup in midweek, bowing out on their own patch at the expense of Championship side Bournemouth after a 2-0 defeat.

So it has been a chastening couple of weeks for Sean Dyche and his players. There is, of course, the comfort of knowing an eight-point buffer still separates them, in 17th, from the Premier League’s relegation zone. But it is a worrying trend nonetheless for a side who were the toast of the league not that long ago, when becoming the first visiting team to beat Liverpool at Anfield in nearly four years.

That sensational triumph was only Burnley’s second away win of the campaign (W2 D3 L6), with the other coming via the same scoreline against Arsenal in December. It was also just their second goal in their past nine away matches in the competition, having scored fewer away goals across the season so far (5) than any other side. Meanwhile, each of their last four away defeats were all to nil.

Crystal Palace Vs Burnley Betting Advice

With Chris Wood’s early effort condemning Crystal Palace to defeat when these sides met earlier in the season at Turf Moor, Burnley have now won the past two league meetings, after also winning 1-0 here at Selhurst Park in June. Meanwhile, only one of the last eight league encounters between these sides featured both teams among the goals, with either side winning to nil in all but one of these contests.

Crystal Palace Vs Burnley – Key Facts:

  • Whereas Palace have scored in nine of their eleven Premier League home games this season, Burnley have failed to find the net in seven of their eleven away fixtures.
  • Palace have lost only one of their past four Premier League home games (W1 D2 L1), meanwhile Burnley come into the game having lost three of their last four away (W1).
  • Only one of the past eight Premier League meetings between the clubs produced both teams scoring, with Burnley prevailing 1-0 in each of the most recent two encounters.

Another cagey duel seems inevitable therefore, particular as both are not without their issues. Palace are missing their main main, although are in solid form at home with one defeat in four (W2 D1 L1), while Burnley are four games without a win having recently been dumped out of the FA Cup by Championship opposition. The Clarets are also the lowest away scorers in the Premier League.
