Crystal Palace Preview – Eagles targeting fifth consecutive win in this fixture?

Fresh from what can only be described as an Anfield schooling, Crystal Palace (10th – W11 D9 L11) can expect a more docile opponent at Selhurst Park on Monday. That is because The Eagles have rather enjoyed their recent renewals with Burnley, winning each of the last four league meetings by an aggregate of 8-1, having won 2-0 earlier in the season at Turf Moor thanks to a goal in either half from Wilfried Zaha and Jeffrey Schlupp.

Heading to Merseyside to compete with comfortably the best team in the division this season was always a formidable challenge, but it had been a challenge Palace had risen to in recent campaigns. Not this time. Severely hampered by losing Wilfried Zaha early on to injury, Roy Hodgson’s side would subsequently limp through proceedings without remotely threatening the champions elect, deservedly losing 4-0 to Liverpool.

Crystal Palace were in excellent form beforehand, with four consecutive victories without conceding a new club record. No reason to dwell on one poor display against a top side therefore. It does, though, leave them marooned aimlessly in mid-table – cut adrift of those pursuing Europe but assured of their top flight status. Motivation could be a factor during their remaining fixtures then, starting with a Burnley side directly below them.

Burnley Preview – Resilient Clarets seeking back-to-back wins?

The performance witnessed at the Eithad Stadium last week was among the worst seen under Sean Dyche, even if the team dishing out the 5-0 scoreline were a supremely talented Manchester City outfit capable of rolling most teams over. The beauty of this Burnley (11th – W12 D6 L13) team, however, is that invariably – irrespective of how downtrodden they may appear to be – they spring back to life sooner rather than later.

A scrappy 1-0 win at home to Watford on Thursday ensured just this, as Burnley delivered the perfect riposte to the beating endured by last season’s champions. Even more impressive was that this result was achieved with exactly the same set of players who started in Manchester. Resilience in abundance. They’ll need plenty more of that ahead of Monday’s visit to Crystal Palace.

Burnley have a miserable record in this fixture, both in recent times (losing the last four meetings) and over a longer period having won only once on thirteen prior visits to face Palace in a league setting. The Clarets have won only four of fifteen away fixtures so far (W4 D4 L7), losing on all but one of four visits to the capital this season (that against Watford), so will do extremely well to depart South London with maximum points.

Crystal Palace Vs Burnley Betting Advice

It seems both managers won’t have the luxury of fielding their strongest eleven for this, which could hamper the quality on show. Five of the last six league meetings featured two goals or less. Crystal Palace keeping four successive clean sheets prior to their Liverpool drubbing, while Burnley boast five shutouts in their last eight top flight fixtures. A cagey contest seems inevitable.

Crystal Palace Vs Burnley – Key Facts

  • Four consecutive Premier League victories, all without letting in a goal, were recorded by Crystal Palace prior to losing 4-0 away to Liverpool last time out.
  • One defeat in nine Premier League games (W5 D3 L1) now for Burnley after Thursday’s 1-0 home win over Watford.
  • Crystal Palace are aiming to win for a fifth consecutive league game versus Burnley, having secured three of their latest four triumphs without conceding.

Due to the strength of both sides residing in the defensive third, it makes sense to keep a cautious stance with this fixture. The promise of very few goals also brings a draw into the equation, although there hasn’t been one in any of the past eight meetings. Instead, it could be worth sticking with Palace, who are seeking a fifth straight win over Burnley and, in my opinion, boast more potential match winners in their ranks.
