Preview: A third London derby in quick succession for Chelsea, who head to Selhurst Park in good spirits after returning to winning ways at the weekend. The same cannot be said for Crystal Palace, however, who are now pointless in their last three Premier League outings.

Crystal Palace Preview – Eagles already on their holidays?

Someone should probably inform Roy Hodgson that his Crystal Palace (13th – W11 D9 L13) team still have plenty worth playing for in the closing stages of this season’s Premier League, because recent displays are indicative of a side who already feel their race is run. A top-half finish, a feat they last achieved in 2014/15, remains realistic even in spite of a recent slump that has now seen them lose three top-flight matches on the bounce.

The Eagles have now suffered three consecutive defeats in the league for the third time this season, after following up a comfortable 2-0 win away to Bournemouth in their first match back since the restart by losing to Liverpool (4-0), Burnley (0-1) and, more recently, Leicester (3-0). However, this current batch of defeats is somewhat unique in that not a single goal was scored during it by Roy Hodgson’s side.

Meanwhile, not since March of 2018 has the club slumped to four straight Premier League defeats. On that occasion, Chelsea were the team inflicting the fourth reverse on them and history could very well repeat itself here. Conversely, they could maintain their decent record versus fellow London sides at Selhurst Park this season, claiming seven of nine points so far in clashes with Arsenal (1-1), Watford (1-0) and West Ham (2-1).

Chelsea Preview – Expect no let up in pursuit of top-four finish?

The pressure towards the top of the Premier League is intensifying. Following their shock 3-2 defeat away to West Ham earlier in the week, Chelsea (4th – W17 D6 L10) soon found themselves outside of the Champions League places for the first time in months when Manchester United picked up maximum points on Saturday. Frank Lampard’s men responded in kind, though, comfortably dispatching Watford at Stamford Bridge in a 3-0 victory.

It goes to show that the margin for error has all but evaporated for The Blues, who once had a five-point cushion to fall back on but must now make do with the two point lead they currently hold over fifth-place Man Utd. In theory, another short trip across the capital should work in their favour, particularly with them already triumphing in three of four London derbies this season as the visiting side.

The only exception being last week’s surprising loss at West Ham, a defeat which now means Chelsea have won only one of their past six away league games (W1 D3 L2), with that coming against a struggling Aston Villa (1-2) in the relegation places. Meanwhile, Lampard’s men last keep an away clean sheet in a 2-0 success at Tottenham in December – their only shut-out on the road all season across 16 games (W8 D3 L5).

Crystal Palace Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

We have one team who appear to be counting down the games until the season is finally over as the other fights tooth and nail for every remaining point. Even in a recent defeat away to West Ham, Chelsea still played some really good football and were only undone late on as they chased an all important winner. That performance highlighted their burning desire to win games as opposed to settling for less, and I am expecting more of the same here.

Crystal Palace Vs Chelsea – Key Facts

  • Palace are still to concede more than two goals in a Premier League home game in 2019/20, winning two of their last six at home (W2 D1 L3).
  • Chelsea have kept only one away clean sheet throughout the whole of this 2019/20 Premier League campaign, winning one of their last six away matches (W1 D3 L2).
  • The Blues have won each of the previous four top-flight meetings, prevailing 2-0 at Stamford Bridge earlier in the campaign, as well as four of the last five staged at Selhurst Park.

Admittedly, Crystal Palace are invariably awkward customers at Selhurst Park. Seldom are Roy Hodgson’s men beaten by a wide margin, with 2-0 representing their largest margin of defeat at home this season. Meanwhile, Chelsea boast one win in their last six away fixtures having kept a single clean sheet in said matches across the entire campaign. Yet this looks an excellent opportunity to record a second, against a seemingly disinterested Palace.
