Crystal Palace – Complacency could haunt Eagles once more?

Thanks to Michy Batshuayi levelling proceedings at Goodison Park on Monday with four minutes of normal time remaining, Crystal Palace (W10 D8 L12) picked up a point they scarcely deserved on the balance on play. The Belgian had only entered the fray a few minutes earlier but made an almost instant impact to net just his second league goal of 2020-21, putting his team on the cusp of Premier League safety as a result.

The immediate challenge for Roy Hodgson is obviously Saturday’s clash at Selhurst Park with Chelsea, against whom the Eagles are on a six-match losing run, which is their longest ever losing sequence against the same side. However, with a 12 point cushion on the bottom three teams and only eight games left to play, Palace are all but mathematically assured of their participation in next season’s top-flight.

We saw last season, however, when losing seven of their final eight league games, how this team can fade once the fear of relegation subsides. It is something Hodgson must guard against in these closing stages. One loss in six (W2 D3 L1) suggests the platform for a strong finish is there, though, negotiating the last three home matches without conceding a goal to Fulham, Man Utd (both 0-0) and West Brom (1-0).

Chelsea – Tuchel happy to grind it out?

On Wednesday, the Blues showed no ill-effects from last week’s humiliating 5-2 loss at Stamford Bridge to second-from-bottom West Brom, producing the sort of slick, well-drilled team performance we have grown accustomed to seeing since Thomas Tuchel’s arrival in England. A 2-0 win in Spain over FC Porto sets them up nicely for next week’s return leg, but also for this weekend’s return to domestic action.

Those dropped points last time around cost Chelsea (W14 D9 L7) their place in the top four, now trailing fourth place West Ham by a point with Liverpool and Tottenham also within striking distance. It ratchets up the pressure ahead of Sunday’s short trip across the capital to Selhurst Park, where the Blues boast a supremely one-sided record having prevailed in eight of the past ten (L2) Premier League meetings there.

Chelsea’s last three wins here were by a single goal though. This was also true in all three of their away league wins under Tuchel so far, at Liverpool, Tottenham (both 0-1) and Sheffield United (1-2). Yet they’ve now drawn two of the last three on the road following low-scoring encounters with Southampton and Leeds, bringing their tally to five away goals in as many games since appointing the former PSG coach.

Crystal Palace Vs Chelsea Betting Advice

We witnessed an entertaining affair in this very fixture last season. Ultimately Chelsea prevailed, as they invariably do here, having won eight of the last ten top-flight meetings at Selhurst Park. Meanwhile a resounding 4-0 win at Stamford Bridge earlier in the season stretched the winning streak of Chelsea against Crystal Palace to six matches, with three of the last four being ‘to nil’. The latter something the Blues now specialise in under Thomas Tuchel.

Crystal Palace Vs Chelsea – Key Facts:

  • Chelsea certainly boast the head-to-head superiority. The Blues winning each of the last six Premier League meetings, and losing only two of their last ten visits to Selhurst Park.
  • Four of the past five Crystal Palace home games produced no more than one match goal. This was also the case in three of the last five away league games for Chelsea.
  • Five of the six league victories Chelsea have earned since Thomas Tuchel’s appointment were accompanied by a clean sheet. Palace failed to score in three of their last four home league games.

It would be a surprise were this latest renewal to follow the same pattern as last season’s 3-2 scoreline. Four of the past five Palace home games went Under 1.5 Goals, the hosts keeping a clean sheet in each of the last three. Meanwhile, Chelsea netted more than once in one of five away league games since a change in manager, recording three clean sheets. In theory then, Under 2.5 Goals has strong claims.
