English Premier League

Preview: Posting identical records through their first seven fixtures, with three wins and three losses apiece, there really is nothing between two teams meeting for the first time in the Premier League since Leeds won 2-0 away to Crystal Palace in 1998. Will history repeat itself at Selhurst Park on Saturday afternoon?

Crystal Palace Preview – Eagles lacking attacking impetus?

Since winning their first two Premier League games of the season, at home to Southampton and away at Manchester United, Crystal Palace have won only once in five league outings (W1 D1 L3) to slip into the bottom half. In other words, a return to some semblance of normality for the South London club, who have finished outside the top ten in each of the last eight top-flight campaigns since promotion in 2013-14.

Even more disconcerting has been some of their performances of late. Aside from a dominant display in a 2-1 victory away to Fulham, who had only a point to their name after six matches, Roy Hodgson’s side have regularly been second best, losing the xG battle – as well as failing to win the contest itself – against Everton (1-2, h), Chelsea (4-0, a), Brighton (1-1, h) and, most recent of all, Wolves (2-0, a).

Big improvements are needed if The Eagles are to begin climbing the table once more, and while they undoubtedly have the fixtures in which to do so, recent displays indicate they are not primed to take advantage. This is perhaps even more pertinent at Selhurst Park, where their record since the start of last season has been average (W7 D6 L9) having won once there in the league in the last seven (W1 D2 L4).

Leeds Preview – Bamford can inspire third consecutive away win?

The Whites have quickly established a rapport among neutral supporters for displaying a brand of football that is admirable yet naïve in equal measure, showcasing a fearlessness that will ensure a few surprise outcomes and scalps this season but also expose their shortcomings along the way. It was a case of the latter more recently, dismantled last time out by a Jamie Vardy attacking masterclass.

A team has netted three times – and on two occasions both – in four of Leeds’ seven league games so far, a trend which continued at Elland Road this past Monday as Leicester ran riot in an emphatic 4-1 victory. For the second time this season, Marcelo Bielsa’s side had conceded a raft of chances equating to more than 3xG, having also done so in their opening 4-3 defeat at Anfield against Liverpool.

The likelihood of them allowing as many scoring openings this weekend, against a typically blunt Palace outfit, are slim but nonetheless highlight a side fraught with glaring flaws. Yet Leeds have fared well on their travels so far with 1-0 and 3-0 wins at Sheff Utd and Aston Villa, respectively, since losing to the champions. Five of their seven away goals, meanwhile, came from their leading marksman Patrick Bamford.

Crystal Palace Vs Leeds Betting Advice

For all their praise this season, Leeds still sit in the bottom half of the Premier League table through seven rounds – level on points and posting an identical record (W3 D1 L3) to that of Crystal Palace, who they face next at Selhurst Park. Furthermore, their process up until now has been patchy, with it excellent on occasions (notably vs Man City) but second-best more often than not having lost the xG battle four times already.

Crystal Palace Vs Leeds – Key Facts

  • This season has seen Crystal Palace have fewer shots (57) than any other Premier League side, while Leeds have attempted the second-most (96) behind only Liverpool.
  • Wilfried Zaha has contributed towards six of Crystal Palace’s eight Premier League goals in 2020-21, scoring five and laying on a single assist.
  • Patrick Bamford is Leeds’ top scorer in the Premier League so far this season, with four of his five goals coming in away fixtures.

In Crystal Palace, though, we have a side bereft of creativity far too often in matches, unable to generate more than 1xG in four of their last five league games, something Leeds have managed all but once in seven league outings. The latter would also win their past two away encounters, both of which to nil, suggesting they can successfully nullify a Palace side boasting one win and just six goals scored in their last seven Premier League home games.
