Preview: Any faint hopes of claiming a first Premier League title since 2012/13 appear to be fading for Manchester United, not helped by a run of three consecutive away draws – an outcome Crystal Palace would surely settle for at Selhurst Park in midweek.

Crystal Palace – Toothless Eagles riding their luck?

Following another insipid and toothless display in Sunday’s drab 0-0 draw with relegation zone occupants Fulham, fans of Crystal Palace (W9 D6 L11) may be thankful that the gap between their team and the Premier League bottom-three is a healthy ten points. That’s because on recent evidence, they look every bit the relegation struggler, despite registering four points from their last two league games.

Those points have come against lowly opposition, though, scoring from both efforts on target in a smash-and-grab 2-1 victory away to Brighton, before failing to trouble Fulham goalkeeper Alphonse Areola at all over the weekend, mustering three shots – all off target – throughout a contest they were a clear second best in. It means they have managed two goals from their past four league games (W1 D1 L2).

The sooner Roy Hodgson has his most influential attacker – and leading goalscorer for the season, with nine – back from injury, the better. Wilfried Zaha has returned to first team training, however, this game against his former club will likely come too soon for the Ivorian. It potentially means another long evening awaits at Selhurst Park, where Palace scored no more than one goal in 10 of 13 league games this term.

Manchester United – Away swagger diminishing?

Sunday’s dour goalless affair at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea may have extended Manchester United’s impressive unbeaten away record, which now stands at thirteen wins and no defeats across their previous 20 away Premier League games, but it also leaves them with two wins in seven in the league (W2 D4 L1). More importantly, they have fallen 12 points behind leaders Man City – who they meet on Sunday.

Before then, the Red Devils (W14 D8 L4) remain in the capital for this favourable fixture against Chelsea’s South London rivals, Crystal Palace. United have been victorious at Selhurst Park on all four recent visits, including a comfortable 2-0 success last term. Although did lose the past two encounters in Manchester, in a fixture that has recently established a trend for producing wins for the away side on the day.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer will certainly hope the trend holds true, with his side coming off three consecutive away league draws having won one of the last five such matches (D4), scoring only three times. All-but one of these draws – the 1-1 stalemate at West Brom – were against top opposition, but even so, this is a worrying decline for a side who earlier in the season were at their most potent away from home.

Crystal Palace Vs Manchester United Betting Advice

Each of Crystal Palace’s past four opponents – Brighton, Burnley, Fulham and Leeds, none of which were anywhere near the level of Wednesday’s opposition – outplayed the Eagles, who were incredibly fortunate to come away from those encounters with only two losses (W1 D1). Roy Hodgson’s men were toothless on each occasion, easily losing the xG battle in all four, and a similar performance could spell real trouble.

Crystal Palace Vs Manchester United – Key Facts:

  • Despite failing to score in three of their past four league games, Crystal Palace claimed four points from these matches and are currently unbeaten in two (W1 D1).
  • Since winning and scoring at least twice in their first six away league games of the season, Manchester United have won two of seven away matches (D5) while scoring just six times.
  • Each of the past four Premier League encounters between the sides here at Selhurst Park produced an away win. The latest of those a 2-0 scoreline in 2019/20.

Manchester United recorded six straight away wins at the start of the league campaign, scoring at least twice in each, but have managed only two away wins in six attempts thereafter. Three of their past four away encounters ended goalless, however, all three were against stiff opposition: Arsenal, Chelsea and Liverpool. On current form, it really won’t take much to record a fifth consecutive away victory over Crystal Palace.
