Crystal Palace – Eagles warming to the task under Viera?

Patrick Viera’s influence on this Crystal Palace team has been evident even this early into his tenure, but three points remain elusive. Monday’s 2-2 draw away at Arsenal means they have won once in eight league games this season (D5 L2). That being their dominant 3-0 win over Tottenham here at Selhurst Park on 11 September – easily their most accomplished performance collectively under the Frenchman.

Chelsea and Liverpool, teams expected to compete for the Premier League title, are the only teams thus far to inflict defeat upon Viera’s fledging side. Meanwhile some of those many draws could so easily have been wins, conceding in stoppage time to Brighton and Arsenal. Those four extra points would place them level with tenth-placed Wolves. In reality, however, they sit 14th. Five points above the relegation zone.

Palace have drawn more games than any other top-flight side so far then, including all of the last three. This has been the case more often than not at Selhurst Park (W1 D3). The last time they begun a top-flight campaign without losing their first five at home, though, was 1990-91. A record they will be confident of equalling, after losing just once at home to Newcastle in all competitions since 2014 (W2 D4).

Newcastle – Big changes already in motion?

St James’ Park was rocking last weekend as supporters used the takeover of the club as a means to celebrate the dawn of a potentially exciting new era. But the barmy atmosphere inside the ground couldn’t prevent an all too familiar outcome. A 3-2 defeat to Tottenham leaving them winless through eight league games (D3 L5) for the third time in Premier League history, and above only Norwich in the standings.

No team this season has allowed more goals than the nineteen of the Magpies. One of only two sides without a clean sheet thus far. They have conceded at least twice on six occasions already, which comes as little surprise bearing in mind no team has given up more big chances or xGA. Steve Bruce’s sacking on Wednesday, after more than two years in the job, certainly had an air of inevitably about it.

Callum Wilson’s goal inside two minutes of his first start since August was about the only positive that could be gleaned from the Spurs loss. The defending for all three goals was abysmal, if not at all surprising. Yet they should be commended for consistently finding the net themselves so far. Newcastle have scored in all but one league game, and in each of the last six since a 2-0 loss on the road at Aston Villa on 21 August.

Crystal Palace Vs Newcastle Betting Advice

What Newcastle would do for a repeat of last season’s 2-0 victory at Selhurst Park this weekend. The Magpies side are second-from-bottom and are yet to win a league game this season (D3 L5), giving up more goals than any other team (19) but somehow managing to score at least once in seven. That win was a rarity, though, ending a five-match winless streak away to Crystal Palace in the Premier League.

Crystal Palace Vs Newcastle United – Key Facts:

  • Newcastle are looking to win back to back matches away to Crystal Palace, having previously been without one in five visits to Selhurst Park (D3 L2).
  • No team in the Premier League this season has played out more drawn matches than the five of Crystal Palace. The Eagles drawing each of their last three in the competition.
  • Both teams scored in seven of eight Newcastle league games this term. The Magpies haven’t kept a single clean sheet so far, shipping 2+ in three of four away outings (D1 L3).

Many believed the feel good factor stemming from the club’s recent purchase would extend to the pitch. That wasn’t the case last weekend, however, as Newcastle slumped to a fifth defeat in eight. Palace, who were excellent at Arsenal last time out, boast only the one win thus far but have played much better than results suggest, and they come into this contest losing one of their last seven in the league (W1 D5 L1).
