The Russian Premier League is already a couple of weeks old and Sunday plays hosts to the first big clash of the season. A Moscow derby between CSKA and Lokomotiv should be an intriguing, early season encounter.

CSKA Moscow Preview – Can CSKA improve on form so far and take the derby spoils at home?

Having won three Russian titles in the space of four years between 2012 and 2016, CSKA have found it more difficult to make a similar impact since that last success. Assistant at the time of that most recent title, Viktor Goncharenko has been in charge for the past three seasons. In that time there have been a couple of runners up slots followed by a disappointing fourth place finish last season. Goncharenko has been given an opportunity to better that, perhaps surprisingly so. The early evidence of this season suggests it could well be another underwhelming effort. A 2-0 defeat on the opening day of the season away to Kryla Sovetov was far from the perfect start. CSKA responded to some degree by winning next time out at home to FK Orenburg. It may have been three points but it was not the convincing win they would have been expecting.

The impressive Nikola Vlasic has signed on a permanent deal following an impressive loan spell from Everton. The Croatian midfielder was on the scoresheet last weekend and is set for another pivotal role on Sunday. Vlasic has already scored in a Moscow derby following his goal against Spartak last season. He will be eager to break his duck against another big rival.

Lokomotiv Moscow Preview – Will Lokomotiv continue unbeaten start to the season?

Having won the title in 2017/18, Lokomotiv turned in a reasonable defence of the Championship last season – finishing second to Zenit. The veteran Yuri Semin has won three league titles across four different spells as boss of Lokomotiv and will be expecting his team to be challengers once again. Their first couple of games have been positive enough but Semin will probably feel they should have maximum points considering both games have been at home. A 1-1 draw against Rubin Kazan was followed by a 2-1 success over newly promoted Tambov. They had to come from behind to take the three points on that occasion.

When you look through the squad list for Lokomotiv you cannot escape how much experience they possess. The Portuguese striker Eder is one of those and he got his first of the season in last weekend’s win. Now in his third season at the club, the player who scored that famous winner in the Euro 2016 final for his country is in no way prolific, however. That was just his sixth league goal. Despite that, he looks set to the lead the line in tomorrow’s derby.

CSKA Moscow v Lokomotiv Moscow Betting Advice

CSKA have had the upper hand in this fixture down the years but Lokomotiv have won on their last two visits to VEB Arena. A very late goal from German defender Benedikt Howedes was the difference in a 1-0 victory last season and I suspect we’ll see another very close game on Sunday. Both teams are still finding their feet this early in the campaign and neither have really hit their stride. With it also being one of the biggest games of both CSKA’s and Lokomotiv’s season, there will be even more pressure surrounding the match.

As ever, the onus will be on the hosts to force the pace of the game but Lokomotiv, under Semin, have shown how adept they are are soaking up pressure – especially on their travels. They are not a free-scoring team but they are well organised and games such as these is where their experience often proves so valuable. It may be a tall ask for them to get another win in this fixture so take some insurance and keep the draw on side as well.
