Czech Republic – Progress hinges on keeping out the Danes?

The Czech Republic are among two teams from Group D, along with England, still going in the tournament after pulling off a big upset in the Round of 16 to eliminate the highest scorers from the group stage. A red card for Netherlands defender De Ligt undoubtedly aided their cause, but Jaroslav Silhavy’s side still had to cash in, which they did, booking their place in the last eight with a 2-0 victory in Budapest.

A fourth European Championship quarter-final as an independent nation was just reward for nullifying the Dutch, who failed to register a single shot on target despite averaging 2.66 goals across their three group matches. The Danes are likely to represent a sterner test, though, losing the sides previous two meetings at this tournament (in 2000 & 2004) but none of the past six in all competitions (W1 D5).

That memorable win against the Netherlands also continued a trend at these finals that has seen the Czech Republic record a win each time they have kept a clean sheet (2-0 Scotland, 2-0 Netherlands) but failed to do so each time they conceded (1-1 Croatia, 1-0 England). However, history tell us the Czechs have never previously managed three clean sheets at the same European Championship edition.

Denmark – Danes tend to land the first blow?

Goals from Kasper Dolberg, who scored twice on his first start at these finals, Joakim Maehle and Martin Braithwaite sealed comfortable progression for the Danes into the last eight, thrashing Wales 4-0 in Amsterdam. That was the second game in succession scoring four times, qualifying in second place in Group B, behind Belgium, with a rousing 4-1 victory over Russia in their final game of the group.

Such has the improvement in the final third of the pitch been that Denmark have seen their shot conversion rise from a low of 2% after the first two matches to 16.7%, that the fifth-highest of the teams still left competing. Three of the goals were laid on by a midfielder more renowned for being workmanlike than intricate, with Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg raising his game since missing a penalty in that opening loss to Finland.

Never before have the Danish scored more goals at the same European Championship than this one (9), while they have also held a 1-0 lead at half-time in each of their last three fixtures (W2 L1). That continues a theme for scoring first, with Kasper Hjulmand’s side making the breakthrough in seven of their previous nine internationals – only failing to hold on for the win in the 2-1 loss to Belgium on Matchday 2.

Czech Republic Vs Denmark Betting Advice

The history of this fixture suggests this last eight encounter is incredibly difficult to call. The Czech Republic boast a perfect record at European Championships though, winning in 2000 and 2004 with the latter at this same stage, but have won none of the past six meetings overall (D5 L1). This tell us momentum is with the Danes, who also appear to be in full swing at this tournament following back-to-back four-goal victories over Russia and Netherlands.

Czech Republic Vs Denmark– Key Facts:

  • Six consecutive matches against Denmark without recording a single victory (D1 L5) for Czech Republic, who did, however, win both previous European Championship meetings.
  • Both Czech Republic wins at Euro 2020 have accompanied a clean sheet, only failing to score in their 1-0 loss to England – a team they could meet in the semi-finals.
  • Denmark have scored eight goals across their past two matches, four in each, having only managed one in their first two. Their first clean sheet, however, didn’t arrive until the last 16 (4-0 vs Wales).

In beating Wales last time, Denmark registered a first clean sheet of Euro 2020 having previously conceded four in three games. The Czechs have fared better, allowing only two goals, although were fortunate to come away with one of two clean sheets in the opener against Scotland. Meanwhile these sides have only failed to score on one occasion each so far, making the 11/10 about both teams scoring worth chancing.

Furthermore, the Olympic Stadium in Baku has hosted three games at Euro 2020, each seeing at least two goals scored with two producing Both Teams to Score.
