Russia’s Daniil Medvedev is one of the frontrunners for the title at the Australian Open 2020. That is on the back of his brilliant run to the US Open final at the end of last year.

The first hurdle on his path to potential success in Melbourne is Frances Tiafoe. The young American is one of the rising stars in the game and he is the youngest player form the USA to sit within the top 50 on the ATP. Can he cause a seismic upset though?

Can Medvedev make a positive start?

Because of temperament and on-court antics, just about everyone watching Daniil Medvedev at Flushing Meadows at last year’s US Open was against the Russian. But some stunning performances dragged him to the final where he somehow managed to make himself a crowd favourite. He lost the US Open final to Rafael Nadal, but raised his stock massively.

The 23 year old looks primed and shaped to be a future Grand Slam champion. Just how far in the future though? There is a whole new level of expectation on him now though. So he will have to handle the hype and the pressure. This will be Medvedev’s first appearance at the Australian Open. Twelve months ago the Russian made the fourth round at Melbourne Park.

Can Tiafoe enjoy his time at Melbourne Park again?

America’s Frances Tiafoe had a brilliant time of things last year at the Australian Open. It was a quarter final place that he took, running against the odds throughout. He knocked out fifth seed Kevin Anderson and then 20th seed Grigor Dimitov.

He bowed out at the quarter final against Rafael Nadal. Tiafoe has secured a little competitive action this year. He bowed out in the first round of the ASB Classic against Mikael Ymer and that’s it. He’s potentially has a great future ahead of him after finish last season at No. 47 in the world.

Daniil Medvedev v Frances Tiafoe Prediction and tip

Medvedev looks confident and is going to take some stopping. Over the best of five sets, Tiafoe looks as if he is going to come up short against one of the top players in the world again.

It’s hard to see anything other than a clean sweep in the match for Medvedev who is as short as 4/6 odds-on for a 3-0 correct score* (betting odds taken from William Hill on January 19th, 2020 at 5:15 pm) but that is still a lot better than what is on offer in the outright winner market.
