Daniil Medvedev started the Australian Open as the third favourite for the title, ahead of Roger Federer. The Russian has made progress through to the fourth round and it still a massive threat in the field to the Big Three.

The next challenge for him comes in the form of former Australian Open winner Stan Wawrinka. The Swiss veteran has shown that there is plenty of life left in his legs having come through some long challenges in his matches so far.

Medvedev looking clinical and efficient

Daniil Medvedev really arrived on the scene at the US Open last year. He was the losing finalist there, missing out against Rafael Nadal, but some stunning performances in the latter stages of the tournament saw the Russian seemingly take his game to the next level.

That run at Flushing Meadows late last year raised his stock and with fairly comfortable passage through to the fourth round of the Australian Open, he’s not the player anyone is want to go to have to meet.

Medvedev did let a set slip in his opening match against the exciting youngster Frances Tiafoe, however, it was comfortable in the end for the Russian. The 23-year-old then raced through his next two matches at Melbourne Park without dropping a set.

His previous best effort at the Australian Open came last year when he reached the fourth round. So in Sunday’s match against the experience Wawrinka, Medvedev is going to be looking to go at least one step further in this slam.

Medvedev has gone up against Stan Wawrinka before. He has prevailed in both of those matches as well. In fact, on his way to the final of the US Open last year, Medvedev claimed a win in the quarter-finals over Wawrinka in four sets.

Their first-ever meeting was at Wimbledon in 2017 and Medvedev claimed the first-round win there in four sets against the Swiss player as well. Four sets, that may just be a trend worth looking at for this one as the pressure starts to ramp up considerably now.

Stan’s day to be up at Melbourne Park?

34-year-old Stan Wawrinka has had to go through some battles at the Australian Open 2020 so far. He was taken to four sets in the first round against Damir Dzumur in what was a really close match. There was little to split the two players at the end of the day.

There was an ever longer fixture for him in the second round in lining up against Andreas Seppi. That was a five-set affair in which Wawrinka had to fight back in after dropping the first set. But then he had a massive break in his third-round match, which should serve him well against Medvedev.

Wawrinka’s Third round opponent John Isner, ranked 19th in the world, retired midway through the second set. So that gave Wawrinka a very nice break in preparation for this match. Wawrinka won the Australian Open in 2014 and has been to the semi-final stage twice since then.

Last year he reached the quarterfinals of both the French Open and the US Open. He still has it in him, but he is going to go into action on Sunday against the clinical Medvedev as the heavy underdog. Which raises the question, will he even get a set off the Russian?

Daniil Medvedev vs Stan Wawrinka Betting Advice

A clean sweep for Medvedev looks the way to go for this fixture. The Russian has been very good so far in this tournament, absolutely on point with his clinical prowess. He looks confident and in control of his emotions, which got the better of him a bit last year. Wawrinka is not likely to have enough in the tank to see him off.
