Darlington Preview – Can Darlington make home advantage count and knock out Football League opposition?
It’s been a rather inconsistent season for Darlington thus far who compete in the National League North. Alun Armstrong took charge of the club at the end of the previous campaign and he will be hoping to lead his team to what would be an FA Cup shock, of sorts. Darlington come into this match in relatively good form with just one defeat in their last nine games. That loss came on Saturday in a thumping 5-1 loss away to Brackley Town who currently reside in the playoff spots. The margin of the defeat will have been a surprise for Armstrong considering his team had not conceded more than two goals in a game since August and no more than three all season.
Due to their non-league status Darlington have had to win three ties just to even get to the first round proper. All of them have come away from home and earning a draw in the first meeting with Walsall means they get a chance to play in the competition at home. It’s an opportunity they will be looking to take full advantage of.
Walsall Preview – Will Walsall make it three wins in a row and reach the second round of the FA Cup?
Having been drawn at home against non-league opposition Walsall would have very much hoped they would have enough to see off Darlington at the first time of asking. Unfortunately for Darrell Clarke’s men their struggles have been there for all to see. They sit fourth bottom of League Two and just four points outside of the relegation spots. Saturday’s 2-1 win at home to Cambridge United brought to an end of a run of six straight defeats in the league which has seen them drop right down the division. Clarke will be hoping that that win, combined with an emphatic 6-0 victory in the EFL Trophy against Forest Green will be the catalyst for them to go on and win this game and a run in the league.
A positive for Walsall is that their form on the road has been better than at home. They have picked up three away wins compared to just two in the league.
