Can Gilbert win crucial opener

Whoever wins this match is going to keep their qualification hopes alive with them both having to go forward and meet Judd Trump. So this is a pressure situation right from the off.

David Gilbert posted a W2 D1 record in the first round of action at the tournament. He was up against Jackson Page, Stuart Carrington and Jak Jones. The draw for Gilbert came against the latter.

It has been a good season for David Gilbert, with highlights being semi final places at the Scottish Open and on his Masters debut. The top effort though came when he finished as runner up at the English Open.

Aside from the draw against Jak Jones, Gilbert didn’t drop a frame in either of his wins in the group. So he shaped up pretty well and he won the last meeting between himself and Hawkins.

That was in the 2019 Championship League with Gilbert collecting a 3-1 win in that match. Overall there have been seven matches between the two players and Gilbert is W3 L4 out of that.

 

Can Hawkins avoid defeat against Gilbert

Barry Hawkins is the outsider in this contest, for which the draw is actually the shortest priced option in the outright at 6/4* (betting odds taken from Bet365 at 00:52 GMT on Tuesday, 9th June 202).

Barry Hawkins was up against Anthony McGill, Hammad Miah and Craig Steadman in his first round group. From that Hawkins took a W1 L2 record, with the draw coming against McGill.

Hawkins didn’t drop a frame in either of his two wins. So it was basically the same return as Gilbert took from his group, so that’s why this is expected to be close.

The head to head points to that as well. So what has this season been like for Hawkins? Well, his highlight was a title at the non-ranking Paul Hunter classic and quarter finals at the China Championship and the European Masters.

He did also reach the quarters of the non-ranking Shanghai Masters and Haining Open, so he has shown up well in those non-ranking efforts. A good omen perhaps for his campaign here.

Hawkins has reached the semi finals on two separate occasions in the Championship League, the most recent of which was in 2017 and this is the first time that he has taken part since then.
