Preview: DC United do not have the strongest of records when facing LA Galaxy, winning just one of the pair’s past six encounters. A resounding 5-1 home defeat last time out against Philadelphia Union hardly augurs well for their prospects of success here either, although they will be facing a team currently enduring a bad spell of form themselves. The venue will be Audi Field, home of DC United in Washington.

DC United Preview

I believe this will be the club’s first competitive fixture since news broke regarding Wayne Rooney’s impending switch back to England, with the Englishman set to assume the role of both player and manager at Derby County in January. This will also be the first match since suffering a humbling 5-1 loss inside their own stadium against Philadelphia Union. So it will be intriguing to see what the response to both setbacks will be here.

It has been several weeks to forget for DC United, both on and off the pitch it would seem. Knowing your star player is departing soon is hardly uplifting news, particularly with the announcement arriving at a time when the team are currently suffering. That horror show last time out against Philadelphia, losing 5-1, stretched their winless run to three games (D1 L2).

Should you wish to include a recent friendly with Marseille into their recent form – and a thumping 8-1 defeat to the French side would suggest DC would rather we didn’t – then it is four matches without winning. However you choose to interpret it all, it is alarming stuff. The bigger picture shows only one victory in their past seven MLS fixtures (W1 D3 L3), and just two out of thirteen stretching back to the middle of May (W2 D7 L4).

At home, meanwhile, DC United have not tasted success since a 1-0 victory over Orlando City on 27 June. It is one win in the past six matches at their Audi Field in Washington DC, where they have won just one of the previous six meetings with LA Galaxy.

LA Galaxy Preview

Seeking to capitalise on the current misfortunes of their hosts are the LA Galaxy, whose own patchy form of late would imply they have demons of their own which urgently require exorcising. That is because despite a talented roster which includes none other than arguably the most egocentric player to have have graced the game in Zlatan Ibrahimovic, the team have still struggled to set the league alight with their performances this season.

As it stands, the team are on course to finish the regular season in the play-offs. Which would be mission accomplished. They are an enigmatic outfit, however, which can be underscored by the fact they have only drawn a single match so far (W12 D1 L10), which occurred back in April some sixteen games ago. Their boom or bust approach certainly dampens any appeal about this contest ending in stalemate.

Some poor recent form also dents the visitors’ charm as well. Heavy defeats to Portland Timbers (4-0) and Atlanta (3-0) in their last two matches cannot have been good for team morale, especially as both losses were incurred away from home, where they have now lost three on the spin – the other loss coming at San Jose Earthquakes (3-0). They will be desperate to avoid a fourth in Washington no doubt.

Prior to this barren spell, however, Galaxy had managed to record three successive away wins against Orlando City (0-1), Kansas City (0-2) and FC Cinncinatti (0-2). So they aren’t completely incapable of producing on their travels, although Guillermo Schelotto’s men do possess a less than inspiring away record (W4 D1 L6, GF10 GA18). Meanwhile, only one team in the entire MLS have scored fewer away goals than LA Galaxy. (10).

DC United V LA Galaxy Key Facts:

  • DC United have a record of W5 D5 L3 at home this season, losing the most recent of those 5-1 to Philadelpia Union.
  • LA Galaxy bring a mediocre away record of W4 D1 L6 to Washington, failing to even score in their last three away matches all of which were in defeat.
  • As the home side, DC United have won only one of the past six meetings (W1 D4 L1).

Betting Summary

The MLS has established a reputation for producing exciting, end-to-end games of football. The end product of that is usually lots of goals. However, any hipsters out there who love nothing more than to rebel against the norm, could do a lot worse than a small wager on both teams not scoring here at chunky odds of 15/8.

DC United have failed to score in two of their past three MLS fixtures and although neither were staged in Washington, where they have scored in eight consecutive league games, a trouncing on their last home appearance – losing 5-1 to Philadelphia Union – won’t have done their withering confidence much good. Meanwhile, none of the Galaxy’s previous six away matches have produced both teams scoring.

However, the tentative selection is DC United to bounce back from a humiliating home defeat last time out. That is mainly because of who they are facing: an LA Galaxy side bringing some truly woeful away form to Washington. Three losses on the spin away from home, all without scoring a single goal, as the second lowest scorers in away matches in the MLS continue to toil outside of Los Angeles.
