DC United – Rising up the East?

Four-time Supporters Shield winners DC United are on the ascent in the East after recently stringing together their most productive spell of the season so far. Hernan Losasa’s team have risen to sixth in the standings, a point above eighth-placed CF Montreal and the play-off line, on the back of two wins and two draws in their past four MLS matches. With this their longest unbeaten sequence this year.

The Black and Reds latest outing seen them put a sloppy Columbus Crew to the sword at Lower.com Field in a 4-2 victory. It was only the second time in 2021 DC scored as many as four – the other being the 7-1 demolition of Toronto FC on July 3 – and the first time they managed this feat on the road in more than two years. They’ll now attempt to win back-to-back MLS games for only the second time all season.

United have now notched two or more goals in three of the past seven games, having previously done so only twice in their first eleven. They’ve also recorded two clean sheets in the last three, one fewer than in the previous nine. So this is a team growing in stature right across the board. And with nine points accrued through their past three outings here at Audi Field, there could yet be more to come.

Montreal – All going awry for the Canadians?

Wednesday’s 2-2 draw with an Atlanta United side that hadn’t won in an eternity rather summed up how things are doing for CF Montreal at the minute. In cruise control at 2-0 to the good, a chaotic conclusion resulted in them conceding twice – one a clumsy penalty – and lose both defender Rudy Camacho and midfield enforced Victor Wanyama to red cards that will see both sit out the trip to DC United.

The man left to assess the carnage is Wilfried Nancy, the Montreal head coach with little option but to shuffle his pack in the absence of the suspended duo. Far from ideal as the team seek out their first win in nearly a month, having taken one point from the last twelve available since recording three straight wins against Inter Miami, New York City and FC Cincinnati at the beginning of July.

That they are on their travels on this occasion, will also be viewed in a negative light. For CF Montreal have not won away from home since a narrow margin victory at FC Cincinnati on May 29. That one of only two wins from nine attempts on the road this term (D2 L5), having lost each of the last three at New York City, New England and Inter Miami, who hadn’t won in seven at the time.

DC United Vs CF Montreal Betting Advice

Hosts DC United are chasing a fourth straight win at Audi Field while CF Montreal will be striving to avoid their fourth consecutive loss on the road. Momentum is therefore with the hosts, who are clear favourites. This fixture doesn’t tend to throw up many goals, though, with one of the past six seeing both score. Furthermore, DC boast two clean sheets in three. And although Montreal’s defence has creaked lately, they were very solid earlier on.

DC United Vs CF Montreal – Key Facts:

  • The momentum is with DC United chasing their third win in five MLS matches (D2). Meanwhile CF Montreal are coming off a four-game winless spell (D1 L3).
  • DC United won all of their previous three matches at Audi Field, two of them 1-0. CF Montreal have lost their last three away, meanwhile, two of them 2-1.
  • Just one of the past six MLS meetings between these clubs produced both teams scoring, with their sole meeting of 2021 failing to produce any goals (0-0).

The last meeting between them also ended goalless – the second time that had happened since 2019 – while the visiting side on the day failed to score in four of the last six. Meanwhile, only one of the last three encounters at Audi Field between the sides saw both get in on the scoring action, with DC United victorious the once (D1 L2). So this may not necessarily follow the script some expect it to.
