Denmark v Portgual

Denmark know that a win will see them progress through to the next round of the competition whilst at the same time all but knocking Portugal out.

The Danes surprised a few with the manner of their performance on Saturday when defeating the Dutch 1-0. Although they rode their luck at times as Holland missed plenty of opportunities, they pressed them high up the mark and played at a high intensity which was ultimately the key to their victory. If they can reproduce a similar performance against Portugal then they will stand a fantastic chance. They must deny the likes of Ronaldo and Nani the space they crave when facing on to their opponents goal whilst also nullifying the threat of Joao Mouthinho from deeper areas. Daniel Agger and Simon Kjaer were outstanding and managed to provide the foundation for the players infront of them to build upon. Both central defenders will surely have another crucial role to play on Wednesday evening.

Portugal wasted the first 75 minutes of their European Championships by attempting to spoil their opening group game. Paulo Bento was only too well aware of Germany’s strength going forward as well as his own sides recent fragility at the back. The end result was an attempt to frustrate the German’s which they achieved for much of the match only to be undone late on by a Mario Gomez header. They upped the tempo dramatically after going a goal down and should have scored at least once. It was a case of too little, too late though. The loss means they are up against it in Group B now and need to ensure they avoid defeat against Denmark to stand a realistic chance of progressing. Ronaldo could well be moved into a more central position at the expense of the ineffective Helder Postiga. Should that be the case expect a much more offensive and direct performance from the Portuguese as they attempt to utilize the power and height of the Real Madrid superstar.

Morten Olsen will surely keep faith in the same players that started and that continuity could be the key. Portugal know that there is still more than enough football still to be played for them to reach the last eight but need to be more positive in their approach from the outset.

Should Portugal be a bit more adventurous it could play into the hands of the Dane’s who have plenty of pace going forward for. At the prices they look more than value and can book their place in the Quarter Finals with their second win of the tournament.
