Phillip Cocu’s Derby County and Alex Neil’s Preston North End clash in an all-EFL Championship Carabao Cup game at Pride Park on Tuesday. Derby County Preview – Will the Rams hit back with a cup victory?

Phillip Cocu’s Derby County were beaten at home last weekend, losing 2-0 to Reading. Despite having more of the ball at Pride Park, the Rams were pretty poor, with two goals in the last five minutes of the first half doing the damage for the Royals.

In the first round of the Carabao Cup earlier in the month, Derby edged past EFL new boys Barrow. David Dunn’s men caused County problems at Pride Park, taking the Championship team all the way to penalties. Derby went on to win 3-2 on spot kicks.

After a tenth-place finish in the Championship last time around, reaching the play-offs will be number one priority for the Rams this season. Derby were very inconsistent last term, winning 17, losing 16 and drawing 13 of 46 league matches. Can Cocu’s men put things right this season?

With Derby being the home team, the Midlands outfit are the slight favourites on Tuesday, with the bookies pricing them at 6/4 to get the victory.

Preston North End Preview – Can the Lilywhites end woeful run against Derby?

Preston North End had another solid season under Alex Neil last term, with the club finishing in a respectable ninth spot. However, having spent large chunks of the season in the top six, the Lilywhites will have been disappointed to have missed out on the play-offs.

North End racked up 66 points, two points more than Derby. Preston won 18 matches, were beaten 16 times and battled to 12 draws. They scored 59 goals and shipped 54 along the way, ending up four points adrift of the top six.

Preston started their Championship campaign with a 1-0 home loss to Swansea City last weekend. Morgan Gibbs-White netted the only goal of the game at Deepdale.

Despite last weekend’s league loss, North End walloped Mansfield Town in the first round of the EFL Cup thanks to goals from Tom Barkhuizen, Sean Maguire, Patrick Bauer and Josh Harrop. Can they get the win at Pride Park on Tuesday and progress through to the third round of the Carabao Cup?

Derby County vs Preston North End Betting Advice

Derby had Preston’s number in the two Championship meetings last season. Back in November, Martyn Waghorn scored in a 1-0 Rams win at Pride Park. Derby also picked up a 1-0 victory at Deepdale, as Wayne Rooney’s free-kick was enough for the narrow victory.

Key Facts – Derby County vs Preston North End Betting Tip

  • Derby are unbeaten in the last 14 meetings, winning ten and drawing four
  • Preston have not beaten Derby since 2008
  • North End have scored just once in their last nine against the Rams

Preston have failed to score in each of the last six meetings, with Derby winning five and drawing one. Four of those have finished in 1-0 wins for County, and we fancy a repeat scoreline this Tuesday. The 1-0 home victory is available at 15/2.
