Dundalk are in pole position to win their fifth Irish League title in the last six years and will be looking to tick another game off when they visit Derry City on Friday.

Derry City Preview – Are Derry good enough to take points off the leaders?

Derry come into this game to continue their quest for European qualification. The Candystripes are in fourth spot at the moment, one place outside the Europa League spots. They have a six point gap to make up over Bohemians who sit directly above them, with St Patrick’s one point behind Derry. What is in their advantage if that they have games in hand and will be looking to take advantage of those in pursuit of their goal. Before that, it’s a visit of the best team in the league and trying to get a result. Derry’s recent form in the league has been decent and they are unbeaten in four games. Their two wins in that run have been high-scoring victories. A 4-0 win at home to Finn Harps and a 4-1 win away to current champions Cork illustrate how potent this team can be. Their mini-unbeaten run has also included credible draws against Bohemians and Shamrock Rovers – both above them in the table.

Young striker David Parkhouse has been a revelation for Derry this season. This is his first year playing for the Brandywell club and he’s certainly making his mark. With eight goals in all competitions it’s already a very decent return. Parkhouse also has a knack for scoring important goals, notching both in Derry’s 2-1 League Cup win – earning them a place in the semi-final. They face Waterford next month for a place in the final.

Dundalk Preview– Will Dundalk make it nine in-a-row in the league?

Dundalk have consistently been the dominant force in Irish football of late and they are determined to continue that. Having won four consecutive titles, Dundalk lost their place as champions last season to Cork City. With the departure of manager Stephen Kenny at the end of that season to the Irish FA it could have been a watershed moment. Kenny is the club’s most successful ever manager but the transition has been relatively painless. A key reason for that is current manager, Vinny Perth, was Kenny’s assistant for the past six seasons. Perth has got Dundalk back to the top of the Irish league as we approach the last third of the season. And they have done it in impressive fashion. Dundalk are eight points clear of Shamrock Rovers and looking very strong.

They travel to Derry on Friday evening having won their last eight in the league and nine in all competitions. Their last defeat came back in the middle of April – one of just two league defeats they have suffered all season. No team has scored more and nobody has conceded fewer. It’s looking ominous for the chasing pack at the moment.

Key-Facts –  Derry City v Dundalk

  • Dundalk are flying high at the top of the Irish Premier Division and looking good for their fifth title in six seasons
  • The home team’s objective is securing European football but they have work to do in order to catch Bohemians in third
  • Derry have not beaten Dundalk in their last 10 meetings – losing six of them, including their last three at home

Derry City v Dundalk Betting Advice

Teams in the Irish Premier Division play each other four times in a season so there will be no surprises heading into tomorrow’s clash. The two meetings so far have seen a 2-0 win for Dundalk at Brandywell in March and an exciting 2-2 draw when the teams met in Dundalk at the beginning of May. There’s no getting away from how much of a hold the current league leaders have over their opponents. Derry’s last win came over two years ago so they will feel it’s long overdue.

With the form that the visitors are in it looks a tall ask for Derry to get a result here. Failure to collect any points would clearly be detrimental to their hopes of finishing in the top three, too. Dundalk have much loftier ambitions, though, and know a win would put them in an even stronger position for the title. With 10 goals scored and none conceded in their last four league games, it’s hard to see anything other than an away win.
