Dijon Preview – Can Dijon pull off a massive shock and progress to the French Cup semi-final?

Dijon are one of three teams – currently outside the relegation zone in Ligue 1 – who are very much in danger of being relegated this season. Wednesday provides another opportunity for them to forget about their league woes for at least 90 minutes as they look to make the semi-finals of this competition for the first time in their history.

Their participation in last year’s French Cup was ended at this stage by the same opponent and whilst they are hugely up against it once again, they at least have the advantage of playing at home this time. It’s at home where Dijon have accumulated most of their points with five of their six league wins coming at their own ground.

 

 

This will be the fourth tie of Dijon’s cup run so far having already faced Valenciennes (Ligue 2), Nimes (Ligue 1) and Limonest (National 3). Interestingly, the biggest challenge so far was their game against fifth tier Limonest last time out when requiring extra-time to see them off. Their only home tie was against Nimes whom they thrashed 5-0.

That win over Nimes is part of an excellent 11 game unbeaten run at home across league and cup. They’ve won six of those including a famous 2-1 victory against PSG back in November.

PSG Preview – Will PSG do as expected and coast past opponents en route to the last four?

PSG may be set for another Ligue 1 title with a lead of 12 points coming into this game but the Parisians have a score to settle in relation to the domestic cup competitions. Thomas Tuchel’s men were  beaten in both the Coupe de France and the Coupe de Ligue last season. There’s no doubt they’ll be looking to put that right this season.

This stage of the season was always going to be a busy period for PSG who are competing in four competitions. The league looks to be wrapped up and they have the final of the League Cup to come at the beginning of April. The Champions League also returns next week with a clash against Borussia Dortmund and that’s likely to be their biggest priority.

This will be PSG’s fourth straight away tie in this season’s French Cup. Last year’s finalists have defeated Linas-Montlhery (6-0), Lorient (1-0) and Pau (2-0) so far. As you would expect due to their busy schedule, Tuchel has elected to make a number of changes for each of the previous games and will likely do so again.

How many changes he makes remains to be seen but Neymar has not played in either of the last two matches and is yet to play any minutes in this competition so far this season.

 

It would be a huge surprise to see Dijon progress at the hands of PSG and not one I think will happen. They are strong at home and score plenty, too. Indeed, Dijon have hit at least two goals in seven of their last eight home games. We all know the firepower PSG possess so that should make for an entertaining games.
