Boxing betting comes into focus on Saturday as Dillian Whyte gets a second bite of the cherry against Alexander Povetkin.

The fight, which is being held in Gibraltar sees Whyte trying to pick up the pieces of a shock defeat against the Russian last time out.

Whyte knows that to have any kind of outside chance at a heavyweight title fight down the line, he needs to redress the balance.

Dillian Whyte Preview – Will Whyte be more cautious?

When Dillian Whyte stepped into the ring against Alexander Povetkin last August, the British fighter was favourite.

He looked the favourite in the bout as well having sent the Russian to the canvas a couple of times early on in the bout.

But then in the fifth round, Whyte was knocked out stone cold by a stunning left uppercut from Povetkin which came from nowhere.

Up until that point, Whyte was in full in control of the fight, but it slipped away from him in a split second.

It also cost him the WBC interim heavyweight title. That is back on the line on Saturday.

Whyte returns to the ring as the strong favourite once against in the match-up.

He is probably going to be just a little more cautious after t for him to him be in now.

It’s unlikely a title fight will come if he loses for a second time against the Russian.

So it’s getting that balance right now between watching for that uppercut and continuing the good work that he was doing the first time that they met.

It’s not as if Whyte is really a cautious type of boxer by nature, so it’s more likely that he will come out and want to get on the gas to exert himself.

That loss was the second defeat of Whyte’s pro-career, leaving him at W27 L2.

The other defeat happened against Anthony Joshua back in December 2015.

Arguably that was the fight that made Whyte a much better fighter.

In his career, half of Whyte’s victories have been by a knockout and we think that’s the way to go for boxing betting in this one.

He really should have finished off Povetkin in that first fight. He had him on the canvas twice in the fourth.

But fights never really seem to be that straight forward when Whyte is involved but on paper, this should be a routine victory for Whyte.

We are expecting it to follow on in much the same fashion as the first fight, Whyte dictating with movement and speed.

Alexander Povetkin Preview – Povetkin unlikely to make it count twice

Povetkin made the most of a mistake from Whyte in that first fight. He launched that stunning uppercut to win.

But he was hurting just before that and throughout the fight, Povetkin looked really lethargic.

But that is boxing for you, it’s usually all about the punch at the end of the day.

One thing is for sure, we don’t see Povetkin going the distance in this fight.

We just don’t think that he has the gas in him to last twelve rounds.

We put that together with not expecting him to win and again, we get to the Whyte stoppage.

The Russian is a former WBA and Olympic champion, but the 41-year old is a spent force at the top of the sport.

He was up against Anthony Joshua in 2018 at Wembley and was knocked out in the seventh.

A points decision against Hughie Fry followed that a year later before a draw with the USA’s Michael Hunter before the clash with Whyte.

“Sasha” was really lucky to get a draw out of that bout.

Povetkin is on a 36-2 career record, with 25 of those victories happening by a knockout.

There’s little chance that he does enough to earn a points decision in this, so his best route to victory would be a stoppage.

Credit due to the Russian he is still battling on and he still looks like he wants a shot at a title before he calls it a day.

He needs this fight as much as Whyte does, but we see this going the way of the British fighter.

Povetkin really wasn’t in that first fight.

Whyte is likely going to be even sharper coming back and more motivated.

More so than the Russian in all reality and we only see the fight ending one way.

Dillian Whyte vs Alexander Povetkin Betting Advice

Povetkin should never have laid a glove on Whyte in that first bout, but the British fighter switched off for just a split second.

But we have to be fully on board with the Whyte victory in this one.

He was all over the Russian in that first fight.

Whyte by a stoppage at 4/7 should be the way to go for Boxing betting* (odds recorded 19:14 GMT March 25th, 2021).
