Preview: Fixtures in which this irrepressible Zenit side, who are four wins from four so far, can realistically come unstuck are few and far between, certainly in the Russian Premier League. However, a trip to the VTB Arena in Moscow, home to a Dinamo Moscow side boasting decent form, is undoubtedly one of them.

Dinamo Moscow Preview – Defensive resilience key to stopping Russia’s finest?

It was a game of firsts last time out in Tula for Dinamo Moscow (4th – W2 D1 L1). A 2-0 loss against Arsenal Tula marking the first blot on their copybook for the season. That result has spoiled an otherwise encouraging start to 2020-21 for Kirill Novikov and his team, whose early exploits comprised six points from a possible nine, as well as three successive clean sheets, against FC Ural (0-2), Rotor Volgograd (0-0) and FC Rostov (2-0).

Coupled with some strong form put together in the closing stages of last season, when sneaking into the final Europa League berth on account of them winning three of their final four fixtures, it means Dinamo have only been beaten on two occasions in their most recent eight contests (W5 D1 L2). Arguably more impressive, however, is the sheer number of clean sheets kept during this period: six, conceding three times in all.

Another shutout might seem rather fanciful here, against the runaway champions from last season who would also claim a 2-0 win at Dinamo’s VTB Arena in the process, but the White-Blues can be heartened by their recent record at home to Zenit. The pair’s previous three league meetings held in Moscow have now produced a win a piece: Dinamo winning 1-0 in 18/19 after a goalless stalemate in 17/18.

Zenit Preview – Determined champs to make it a perfect five wins from five?

The 2018/19 and 2019/20 league title winners have shown in these early throes of the season that there are multiple avenues to earning victories. Efficient and defensively robust across their first two match-ups with Rotor Volgograd and FC Rostov, beating the pair by the same 2-0 scoreline away from home, Zenit (1st – W4 D0 L0) would then turn in a resilient performance at home to CSKA Moscow, coming from behind to win 2-1.

Last weekend, however, the reigning champions exhibited their attacking prowess, firing four past a helpless FC Tambov. The only negative being a late goal conceded – the ninth league game in eleven, when including results towards the end of last season, in which they’ve failed to register a clean sheet – despite strengthening in this department during the off-season with the acquisition of Dejan Lovren from Liverpool.

The former Anfield man already has a goal since arriving and almost doubled his tally last time out, with his aerial threat from set-plays only increasing his new team’s ability to seriously threaten opposing defences. Zenit are unbeaten in their past 23 league matches (W19 D4) and certainly appear well equipped to pry open one of the leanest back-fours in the country at this moment in time.

Dinamo Moscow Vs Zenit Betting Advice

Recent meetings between the two have been incredibly close-run affairs, and this latest duel is shaping up to be no different. Zenit, despite their dominance in recent times, have only managed one win in three previous league visits to Dinamo Moscow, failing to even score in both the 2017/18 and 18/19 campaigns. Dinamo remain as stingy as ever, too, with their defence breached only twice in the past eight games.

Dinamo Moscow Vs Zenit – Key Facts

  • Four teams managed fewer wins at home in 2019/20 than a Dinamo Moscow side which won only four of its fifteen home games (W4 D4 L7).
  • Now up to 23 league games without incurring a loss (W19 D4), Zenit have failed to win only one of their previous eleven away league fixtures (W10 D1).
  • Five of the previous six league meetings staged in Moscow between the sides featured no more than two match goals, with each of the last five seeing no more than one side scoring.

Five of the last six encounters staged at Dinamo’s VTB Arena produced Under 2.5 Goals, with the anomaly a 3-0 Zenit win in 2016 whereby all three goals came in the second half, including a penalty in the 92nd minute. Goals, therefore, are expected to be at a premium. It is a rarity that Zenit don’t find a way to win, however, making the odds about a low-scoring away triumph appealing.
