Dinamo Zagreb Preview – Can the champions make it seven league wins in a row and go seven points clear in the process?
It’s not been a flawless first part of the season for Dinamo domestically but they come into this game in a relatively good position. For a team who lost only twice in the whole of the last season they have already lost as many games in the first 15 games of this campaign. With just one draw, however, it means the champions are top by four points and also have a game in hand over their nearest rivals. Considering this is also be done in tandem with competing in the group stages of the Champions League it’s an impressive enough start for Dinamo and they have a chance to make it even better with a win on Friday.
The leaders flexed their muscles in the last game before the international break when thumping Rijeka 5-0 away from home. That was their sixth win in a row in the league and they have won five of those without conceding a goal. Should they make it seven wins on the bounce it would already be very difficult for any team to overtake them despite not even being halfway through the season.
Hadjuk Split – Will Hadjuk repeat their win from earlier in the season over the leaders and move to within a point?
Looking back at last season and Hadjuk Split finished in fourth spot a full 30 points behind the eventual champions, Dinamo. It’s a huge gulf so the fact they are only four points behind the leaders approaching the midway points of the season is some sort of achievement. They’ve not won a league since 2005 and it was always going to be a huge ask for them to end that wait this season simply because of how formidable this Dinamo team is.
It was a statement of intent when Hadjuk defeated Dinamo back at the end of August as it was their first win in seven meetings between the two. They now have to go beyond even that and at least get a point away from home. That could be easier said than done, though, as Hadjuk’s away from in the league has been extremely underwhelming. Their seven games on the road have seen them win only once and lose three. It’s hardly a record that inspires confidence going into what is easily the toughest away game they face.
