Preview: The Croatian Super Cup occurs in the week leading up to the new season, but only under very specific circumstances: when two separate clubs win the league and cup competitions. Due to this stipulation, this will be the first Croatian Super Cup for five years. Dinamo Zagreb reigned supreme in the league but came up short in the cup final, losing 3-1 to Rijeka. Who will come out on top in this rare Super Cup spectacle?

Dinamo Zagreb Preview – League champions to exact cup revenge?

The country’s most successful club showed absolutely no mercy last season as they secured a 21st league title with what could best be described as a procession, finishing 25 points ahead of the rest of the division (W29 D5 L2, GF74 GA20). Such was the gulf between them and everybody else, it would be natural to assume they are the overwhelming favourites to claim the spoils in this Super Cup. That isn’t quite true, though.

Firstly, the club nicknamed Modri (The Blues) haven’t exerted the same level of dominance in this one-off, often sporadic encounter over the years, lifting the trophy on five of the nine occasions they have contested it. Which, for a team that has been as utterly dominant as they have for a long time now (Dinamo have claimed 13 of the last 14 league titles), it isn’t quite the commanding record one might come to expect.

Then there is the curious case of the opposition. Whereas most teams are swatted aside by the Croatian giants, their opponents in the Super Cup are perhaps the one rare exception. In the previous six meetings in all competitions, Zagreb have come out on top just the once – with the most recent likely to still be at the forefront of the players’ minds, after losing last season’s Croatian Cup final 3-1. The four league encounters last term produced one win apiece.

Nobody can dispute who the best team in the country are at the present time, not after the manner in which they blitzed their way to yet another league crown in the last campaign. Over 90 minutes though, in an isolated match, Dinamo Zagreb have been vulnerable versus this very opposition, more so than any other.

Dinamo Zagreb to WIN & BTTS

Rijeka Preview – Zagreb’s nemesis to cause them more issues?

Just their fourth appearance in the Croatian Super Cup was the reward for capturing the 2018-19 Croatian Cup, beating the very same opponent in the final that awaits them here. The same opponent they claimed five points from in their four league meetings last season (W1 D2 L1). This despite finishing the campaign a full 25 points behind the eventual champions. So while the odds may not favour their chances, recent history would suggest Rijeka shouldn’t be discounted.

Dinamo Zagreb were completely dominant last season, and not for the first time. Yet the fact 66% of their total losses in league and cup came against Rijeka must surely instill so much belief into Igor Biscan and his players, with the Rijeka manager – a former midfielder at Liverpool during his playing career – targeting further success here as the club goes in search of only its second-ever Super Cup.

To win the cup final will also have been a huge psychological blow to their rivals. Goals from Antonio Colak, Tibor Halilovic and Zoran Kvrzic sealed a memorable 3-1 victory for Rijeka, as they claimed the Croatian Cup for the fifth time in their history. That was also their second triumph in the competition in the past three years. If anything, those performances in the cup are further evidence of a team capable of performing better in one-off encounters rather than over the course of a full length season. Another 3-1 Rijeka victory is 25/1 with Betfair.

Which makes them incredibly dangerous in this contest. However, it would be foolish to merely overlook their shortcomings in the league. As there were many of them, to be fair. To lose on five more occasions and collect 25-points fewer (W19 D10 L7, GF70 GA36) is illustrative of how far behind their rivals Biscan’s team remains. It also highlights how much more susceptible to bad days at the office they can be.

Dinamo Zagreb V Rijeka Key Facts:

  • Dinamo Zagreb secured their 21st league title last season, finishing 25 points better off than Rijeka.
  • Rijeka recorded a 3-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb to win last season’s Croatian Cup.
  • The head-to-head meetings in league and cup last season slightly favoured Rijeka (W2 D2 L1).

Betting Summary

Seemingly incapable of winning this particular war, Rijeka’s performances in recent head-to-head meetings with Dinamo Zagreb (W2 D2 L1 in the past twelve months) are that of a team certainly capable of winning the odd battle. To register two victories over a team that steamrollered the league is worthy of plenty of respect, especially when one of those came in not-too-dissimilar settings when prevailing 3-1 in the cup final.

However, Rijeka remain a far more inconsistent outfit. Which makes them an unreliable betting proposition. When including both league and cup, Dinamo Zagreb won substantially more games (33 V 24) and suffered far fewer losses (3 V 7). Personally, I would rather be on a team which produces the goods regularly than an erratic, albeit very capable on their day, outfit. In this particular contest anyway.

Either way, this should be extremely competitive if recent encounters are anything to go by. Three of their five meetings last season produced both teams to score, and I think that could be the safest route into this volatile contest. Zagreb are the superior side, but Rijeka usually find a way to raise their levels against them.
