Austria’s Dominic Thiem has been the instigator of one of the biggest upsets of the tournament. He took down last year’s losing finalist Rafael Nadal in the quarter finals.

It is Germany’s Alexander Zverev that he takes in the final four. At the conclusion of this, one of them will be in their first ever Australian Open final. Waiting there will be either Novak Djokovic or Roger Federer.

Thiem getting better and better in Melbourne

Austria’s Dominic Thiem had never been past the fourth round of the Australian Open prior to this campaign. He is now on the brink of what would be his third Grand Slam final. The previous two both happened at the French Open which he lost against Rafael Ndaal.

Thiem took some revenge over the great Spaniard in the quarter finals of this campaign. Despite being an underdog for the fixture Thiem was on his game right from the off, matching Nadal’s dogged determinism all the way. It was a 3-1 win that Thiem took, the Austrian claiming each of his sets via a tie break.

Three of his last four matches at the Australian Open have needed more than three sets to be settled. But the threat of Thiem in terms of being a title challenger, really started looking real in the fourth round when he took apart world number 10 Gael Monfils in straight sets. Thiem is the odds-on favorite for this fixture.

Thiem leads the head to head 6-2 against Zverev. Their most recent meeting was at the Nitto ATP Finals at the end of last year. Thiem won it as he has done in three of the last four meetings.

The two previous Grand Slam meetings between the pair both happened in France. Thiem is a very good clay court player, and he won both of those clashes.

Can Zeverev live up to potential

22-year-old Alexander Zeverev has never lived up to his potential at the Slams in his young career. The German had not been past the fourth round of the Australian Open before, and never past the Quarter Finals of 18 previous appearances in the main draw of the Slams.

So this is his best effort and it’s a great way to kick off the new year for him. Will this be his year, because he has long been touted as being a future Slam champion? In the quarter finals, Zverev stopped the run of former Champion Stan Wawrinka, fighting back to win 3-1 after having dropped the opening set.

In total, it has only been the one set that he has dropped at Melbourne Park this year. In the form of Thiem, it will be the first top-ten player that he has faced in the tournament so far. This now will be the biggest match of his career. Can Zverev handle the mental pressure? As an aside the German has vowed to donate the $2.7 prize to the Australian bushfire relief if he wins the tournament outright.
