Novak Djokovic is going for Australian Open title number eight. It has been a seamless campaign from him so far at Melbourne Park and he is going to take some stopping when it comes to a Slam Final.

Austria’s Dominic Thiem is the man who will be opposing him in the Final on Sunday. Thiem has taken out a handful of top-ten players so far in the campaign, including Rafa Nadal. Can he power his way past Djokovic for his first Slam title?

Djokovic set to create more history

Novak Djokovic has won six of the last nine Australian Open titles that have been on offer. It’s been seven for him at the event in total, making it his most successful Major. He will be defending his title on Sunday and it hasn’t been a stressful campaign for him at all in 2020.

Djokovic did let a set slip in his opening round match but has not done so since. Along the way, he has brilliantly negated the massive serve of Milos Raonic and eased to a straight-sets win over Roger Federer. Djokovic was up against Federer in the semi-finals and remarkably fought back from 4-1 down and 40-0 love down in the opening set to win it.

Djokovic has taken his last two Australian Open titles in straights sets, those coming against Andy Murray in 2016 and then Rafael Nadal last year. He has been here so many times and that experience has to account for so much on the day.  The Serbian also benefits from playing his semi a day earlier than Thiem did his.

Twelve of Djokovic’s 15 matches at the semi-final or final stage of the Australian Open have been against players who were ranked inside the top 5. In total, he has dropped five sets only across his seven appearances in the final of the Australian Open.

Can Thiem pull off an underdog success?

The weight of history in having to face Novak Djokovic is against Thiem here. The Austrian is through to his first final at the Australian Open, never having been past the fourth round at the event. He has been to two previous Grand Slam final.

Those were at the 2018 and 2019 French Opens where he lost against Rafael Nadal on both occasions. He has faced some tricky challenges on the road to the final at Melbourne Park this year. But Thiem has risen to the challenges and has looked better and better the longer the tournament has worn on.

Thiem took a thrillingly tight 3-1 win over Rafael Nadal in the quarter-finals, each of Thiem’s sets happening via a tie-break. Then in the final four, he was up against Alexander Zverez. Thiem had let the opening set there slip, but did well to knuckle down and turn the match around. Two of his three sets there were won on a tie-break as well.

Dominic Thiem vs Novak Djokovic Betting Advice

Djokovic is the king at Melbourne Park, however, the head to head is fascinating. Djokovic leads 6-4 over Thiem but has lost four of the last five against the Austrian. But tellingly, none of those victories for Thiem were on outdoor hard courts.

Key Facts – Dominic Thiem vs Novak Djokovic Betting Tip

  • Dominic Thiem has won four of the last five meetings with Djokovic
  • Dominic Thiem enters his first Australian Open Final
  • Novak Djokovic is a seven-time Australian Open champion

Djokovic has won the two previous meetings that they have had on outdoor courts. So that balances the book a little bit. There has been no chinks in the armour of Djokovic at the Australian Open 2020 and he still looks as if he has more to come.

He can handle this and a Djokovic 3-0 in set betting looks solid. Five of Thiem’s last six sets won have been via a tie-break. Djokovic isn’t going to let him off that easily.
