Preview: Three days on from their harrowing outing in the Europa League, can Borussia Dortmund avoid a third successive home defeat inside Signal Iduna Park? Marco Rose’s men take on his former employers, Borussia Monchengladbach, with the visitors seeking to complete a rare league double.

Borussia Dortmund – Supporters losing faith in Rose regime?

Possibly still smarting from a chastening night in Europe on Thursday, when manager and players were booed in unison at the final whistle by the Signal Iduna Park faithful following a 4-2 loss to Rangers. The Black and Yellows aren’t afford any time to dwell, however, immediately switching their focus back to domestic matters. More precisely a six-point gap to leaders Bayern Munich, who play earlier in the day.

BVB surprisingly made light work of high-flyers Union Berlin last time out in the league. Coasting to a 3-0 success in the capital courtesy of Marco Reus’ first Bundesliga brace in two years. That result marked a first clean sheet in seven, though, which soon became eight once the SPL Champions went to work on them. Back-to-back home defeats (2-5 vs Leverkusen) for a side W9 L2 as Bundesliga hosts in 2021-22.

Key Stat: Marco Rose’s team might not be the most convincing defensively, but they are usually good for a goal themselves. BVB have scored in 53 of their past 54 Bundesliga matches – their goalless draw in this season’s reverse fixture vs Gladbach the exception.

Borussia Monchengladbach – Foals finally stringing results together?

When Denis Zakaria – the midfielder having since departed for pastures new in Turin with Serie A’s Juventus – scored the only goal when Dortmund visited Borussia-Park earlier in the season, the Foals must have believed they would kick on and mount another challenge for European football. That hasn’t proven to be the case, though, entering Sunday’s reverse fixture a mere four points above relegation.

Their situation would have been even more precarious had it not been for taking four points from the last six available. Following up a 1-1 scoreline at Arminia Bielefeld with just their second win in ten Bundesliga outings (D2 L6) by edging Augsburg 3-2 at Borussia-Park. Those results continued a theme for scoring and conceding, however, with that now eight Bundesliga games on the spin seeing both teams score.

Key Stat: The Foals are still waiting for their first away clean sheet of this Bundesliga season, conceding at least once in each of their past 15 away league games.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Borussia Monchengladbach Betting Advice

In spite of their defensive inadequacies, it is worth bearing in mind that three of the last four head-to-heads in league and cup saw Under 3.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score No return a winning bet. This includes last season’s corresponding fixture at Signal Iduna Park, which Dortmund won easily 3-0. But also their clash at Borussia-Park earlier this season that Gladbach shaded 1-0, limiting Dortmund to 0.65 xGF.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Borussia Monchengladbach – Key Facts:

  • Across all competitions, Dortmund have won 15 of their last 16 home meetings versus Monchengladbach, winning the last eight such encounters in a row.
  • The Foals did inflict a 1-0 loss upon BVB when the sides met first time around this season, though, a third meeting in their last four to see only one team score.
  • Dortmund have lost successive home matches, shipping nine goals in the process. On the other hand, Gladbach are unbeaten in three consecutive away games (W1 D2) – the highlight being their win in Munich over Bayern.

Are we primed for a first Bundesliga stalemate in Dortmund of 2021-22? The reason I say this is because Gladbach are unbeaten in three successive road trips. Drawing 1-1 at Bielefeld and Hoffenheim either side of beating a depleted Bayern 2-1. The Foals will also be the fresher for not having any midweek commitments. Meanwhile Dortmund will still be feeling the affects of Thursday’s 4-2 loss at home to Rangers.
