Preview: With their position set in stone irrespective of Matchday 34’s outcome at Signal Iduna Park, Borussia Dortmund can still have a big say in the Bundesliga survival scrap. The Black and Yellows welcome Hertha Berlin knowing the visitors only need a point to guarante a tenth successive season at this level.

Borussia Dortmund – Scoring swansong for Norwegian prodigy?

For the third time in four seasons, and eighth overall, Borussia Dortmund will finish as the best of the rest behind the irrepressible Bayern Munich. All that remains of 2021-22 then is putting on one final show for the ardent crowd inside Signal Iduna Park, who have already been treated to the most home goals of any team in the Bundesliga. So, could it be a goal-laden send off for arguably the club’s most exciting talent?

Erling Haaland’s move to the Premier League was confirmed earlier in the week, the Norwegian presented with one last opportunity to add to his 85 goals in 88 club appearances. At the end of an injury affected campaign, the 21-year-old will be keen to depart North Rhine-Westphalia on a high. Meanwhile BVB, for what it is worth, are only one goal shy of equalling their all-time best haul for a single season.

Key Stat: Dortmund have scored two or more in 14 of 16 Bundesliga home games this season, and at least three on nine occasions. While only Bayern Munich have picked up more points at home than their 36 (W12 L4).

Hertha Berlin – Old Lady living to fight another day?

Seven points from their past four games has helped make the equation heading into the final round much more forgiving on the capital club. Should Stuttgart fail to register a win at home to European-chasing FC Koln, then Hertha Berlin will spend a tenth successive campaign in the Bundesliga from next season. Failing that, a point away in Dortmund suffices. However, they’ve not won here since 2013 (D2 L5 since).

Adding to their sense of anxiety will be their away record. In 2021-22, only three sides have lost more such fixtures than The Old Lady, whose tally of 36 conceded in 16 away games is inferior only to the 47 of bottom-of-the-league Greuther Furth. Momentum is with the visitors though. In their previous two away assignments, Hertha recorded a narrow-margin success at Augsburg before holding Bielefeld to a 1-1 draw.

Key Stat: Hertha Berlin have scored three times across their last three Bundesliga away matches, scoring exactly one goal each time. Those three goals were as many as they managed in their eight previous away league games.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Hertha Berlin Betting Advice

For the hosts, it is an opportunity to bid a fond farewell to arguably the club’s most exciting and talented players in recent times. There is also the chance they could rewrite a little piece of history, needing two goals to set a new club record for most goals in a single season. For the visitors, a draw or better removes the prospect of having to contest a play-off to remain in this division.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Hertha Berlin – Key Facts:

  • Hertha Berlin, requiring a point to guarantee their Bundesliga status, are desperate to avoid what would be a third consecutive away league defeat at the hands of Borussia Dortmund. Both encounters saw the home side win ‘to nil’.
  • No team has scored more goals at home in this season’s German Bundesliga than the 50 in 16 such games of Borussia Dortmund. The Black and Yellows have scored at least three one nine occasions at Signal Iduna Park in 2021-22.
  • This will mark the final outing in BVB colours for forward Erling Haaland. The Norwegian has been prolific during his time in Germany, scoring a hat-trick in Borussia Dortmund’s most recent home league game – a 4-3 loss to Bochum.

Dortmund could go the entirety of the season without having drawn a single home game. They’ve also scored freely in front of their fans, at an average of 3.13 a game – that the best in the league. On the other hand, only bottom side Greuther Furth have allowed more goals away from home than Hertha Berlin. I’ll back a high-scoring Dortmund win with Erling Haaland contributing at least one in his BVB swansong.
