Preview: The first Revierderby of 2020-21 arguably arrives at an inopportune time for both clubs, with Borussia Dortmund reeling from a midweek defeat and Schalke still enduring a luckless run. It is the hosts, however, who are overwhelming favourites to register a victory similar to the 4-0 scoreline they accrued here in May of last season.

Borussia Dortmund Preview – BVB to show no mercy on home soil?

The Black and Yellows come into this Revierderby on the back of a disappointing result in Europe, going down 3-1 in Italy to Lazio as their Champions League campaign got off to the worst possible start. Erling Haaland grabbed himself a goal at the Stadio Olimpico, making it twelve for club and country in 2020-21, however that was the sole positive on a bad night for Lucien Favre’s side.

Victory on Saturday would at least go some way to atoning but, in truth, a win is the absolute minimum requirement here. Dortmund routed Schalke at Signal Iduna Park in May of last season, easing to a comfortable 4-0 success, and if anything the gulf between the sides has grown into a chasm in the intervening period. Already this season there is a gap of nine points, which still doesn’t do it justice.

Slip-ups at home are few and far between, also, with Dortmund winning seven of the last nine Bundesliga matches staged at their ground. All seven would feature a clean sheet, including both wins this season over Borussia Monchengladbach (3-0) and Freiburg (4-0). Another shut-out is feasible: only Augsburg have so far breached a Dortmund defence which has averaged a league-best seven shots conceded per game.

Schalke Preview – Winless streak up to 20 and counting?

A first Bundesliga win since January continues to evade them, however, Schalke finally have themselves a platform on which to potentially build from after collecting their first point of the season last time out. It wasn’t pretty, nor entirely deserved on the balance of play, but new boss Manuel Baum will be more pleased with the sight of this team competing – something that is mandatory in a Revierderby.

To their credit, Schalke do tend to turn up in this fixture, and often irrespective of prior form. Across the previous nine editions of this heated rivalry, The Royal Blues have succumbed to defeat only twice as both teams remain locked at two wins apiece. The notion that form is irrelevant when big rivals clash seemingly ringing true, which would make the price about an away win appealing.

Schalke are handsome odds for a reason though. For this is a team which forgot how to win a long time ago (D7 L13), and seldom looked like doing so since. Even their draw with Union Berlin in the last game had a touch of fortune about it, failing to create a single big chance as they comfortably lost the xG battle: SCH 0.29 – 1.01 UNI. They had previously lost all three league games this season by an aggregate of 1-15.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Schalke Betting Advice

If ever fixture where the rule “form goes out the window” applies, it is this one. The spoils have been evenly shared across the previous nine Bundesliga meetings (two wins each and five draws) although Dortmund would saunter to victory here after the lockdown last season, running up a 4-0 scoreline. Something similar could – maybe even should – be on the cards as there is a chasm between where these teams are at.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Schalke – Key Facts:

  • Each of the last seven Bundesliga home wins for Borussia Dortmund would feature a clean sheet for Lucien Favre’s side.
  • Despite a 1-1 draw with Union Berlin in their last game, Schalke have now managed to avoid winning in their last 20 Bundesliga matches (D7 L13).
  • A 4-0 win at Signal Iduna Park for Dortmund in May of last season marked only a second win for BVB (W2 D5 L2) across the previous nine Bundesliga meetings with Schalke.

Aside from losing in Augsburg on Matchday 2, Dortmund have barely put a foot wrong in the Bundesliga so far. They are fallible, of course, but not to the extent they should be dropping points at home to a Schalke side whose ongoing winless league run is now up to a barely believable 20. Erling Haaland scored twice in the home wins against Freiburg and Gladbach and, buoyed by a consolation in midweek, is fancied again.
