Borussia Dortmund – Prolific Haaland inspired hopes?

Not for the first time since signing for the German giants in January 2020, the plaudits following a first-leg 3-2 victory in Spain were almost exclusively that of Erling Haaland, whose brace at the Estadio Ramon Sanchez-Pijzuan handed his team the initiative ahead of this decisive return leg at Signal Iduna Park. However, if recent history has taught Dortmund anything, it is that they can take nothing for granted.

In 2019/20, under then manager Lucien Favre, BVB would also hold a slender lead in the Last-16. They would surrender that, along with the tie, when losing 2-0 in France to Paris Saint-Germain. Meanwhile, in the season before, the German side were outclassed at this same stage in both games of their tie with Tottenham Hotspur, meaning they have lost seven of their thirteen Round of 16 matches (W5 D1).

In a certain Norwegian, though, they boast a powerful differential – as recently evidenced in Saturday’s Der Klassiker, in which Haaland netted twice inside the opening nine minutes against champions Bayern Munich before departing the field on the hour with the scoreboard finely poised at 2-2. Dortmund suffered in his absence, however, losing for the first time in five competitive fixtures (W4 D1).

Sevilla – Must defy poor form as well as first-leg deficit?

Dutch international Luuk de Jong played an integral part in Sevilla claiming their record-extending sixth UEFA Cup/Europa League trophy in 2019/20. The former Monchengladbach man scoring twice in the final against Inter Milan. It is his late header in the first leg of this tie which has given the La Liga outfit a fighting chance of becoming only the sixth team in the Champions League era to successfully overturn a first-leg home loss.

Yet that defeat in Andalusia has exacerbated a task that was always likely to be challenging irrespective of how the opening contest panned out. Sevilla have managed only one victory across their past four Champions League away matches in the Last-16 – that a 2-1 scoreline in England over Man Utd in 2017/18 – though do maintain a creditable record in Germany with five wins from ten previous visits.

Dampening the appeal somewhat about another fruitful outing is the fact Julen Lopetegui’s charges are coming off a hugely underwhelming period of their season, having lost each of their last three competitive encounters. Beaten twice inside four days by Barcelona, the latter seeing them exit the Copa del Rey, Los Palanganas would succumb to a shock 2-1 defeat in Liga at lowly Elche last time out.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Sevilla Betting Advice

With Sevilla seeking to restore parity in the tie, Dortmund should find there are more spaces to exploit than otherwise would have been the case had the Spaniards not lost the first leg 3-2 at home. The Germans could be without a number of important first-team personnel, though. Raphael Guerreiro and Jadon Sancho are rated doubtful, among others, which would be as big a blow for the hosts as it is a boost to the visitors.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Sevilla – Key Facts:

  • Both teams had sustained just one loss during the group phase – Dortmund topping Group F despite producing an identical record (W4 D1 L1) to Group E runners-up Sevilla.
  • Dortmund striker Erling Haaland has scored on all five of his Champions League appearances this season and is the tournament’s outright leading scorer on eight.
  • A 3-2 win for Dortmund in Spain in the first-leg levelled up the head-to-head record between the clubs, though Sevilla do boast a 1-0 win in their sole meeting on German soil.

Prior to losing the first-leg, Sevilla had recorded eight consecutive clean sheets, all in victory. Since then, they have allowed nine goals (excluding those scored in extra-time) in five games. Their sole clean sheet in this spell away to Osasuna. Meanwhile, nine of Dortmund’s last thirteen matches in all competitions featured both teams scoring, while only two failed to produce at least three goals. Expect a entertaining return leg.
