Borussia Dortmund – Haaland verging on double digits already?

If you’re after goals, well then you’ve come to the right place. There have been 22 of them across Dortmund’s first four Bundesliga contest. The Black and Yellows responsible for scoring 13 of that total. Only once before, in 2015-16, have they netted more frequently over the opening four rounds, while the 1991-92 season was the last time they had allowed as many as the nine they have now.

All in all there has been on average 5.5 goals per game involving Marco Rose’s men, easily a league-high. Match going fans are the big winners. As not only are they being treated to consistent goalmouth action but their team has picked up a fair few points along the way. Nine to be exact. Recording three wins out of four despite the defence going missing, breached at least twice in each Bundesliga outing thus far.

Five goals have come from an all too familiar source: Erling Haaland. The Norwegian scored in both wins at Signal Iduna Park this term, grabbed a brace in last week’s epic 4-3 victory away to Bayer Leverkusen and then opened his account in Europe for the season in Wednesday’s successful outing in Turkey. Five goals in four Bundesliga games and nine in seven for the season from the indomitable 21-year-old.

Union Berlin – European workload now a consideration?

For the first time in the club’s admittedly extremely brief Bundesliga history, Union Berlin have remained unbeaten through the first four matchdays. Last week’s rather forgettable scoreless draw at home to FC Augsburg does, however, mean they have only managed the one win so far – which was their 2-1 success against Monchengladbach over in Berlin. While there is also additional workload to be factored in.

On Thursday, Die Eisernen embarked on their maiden voyage in the group stage of a major European competition. The travel undertaken, with their opening match played away in the Czech Republic, can only be viewed as detrimental towards their prospects of avoiding a third successive league defeat at Signal Iduna Park. Especially with them playing nearly an hour a man light following Paul Jaecekl’s red card.

That they went and surrendered an eight-match unbeaten start to the season, going down 3-1 to Slavia Prague, only served to compound all of the above. Far from ideal preparation for a match-up with the division’s leading scorers, on the road in Dortmund where they’ve succumbed 5-0 and 2-0 the last two times. Moreover, it is seven away Bundesliga games without a win (D4 L3) dating back to February.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Union Berlin Betting Advice

A contrast of styles at Signal Iduna Park sees Borussia Dortmund host Union Berin. The former have seen a huge goal return so far this Bundesliga season, with an average of 5.5 per game the most in the division. However, the latter’s tally of 9 in all, with five scored and four conceded, works out at a mere 2.25 by comparison, with only two teams (FSV Mainz and Arminia Bielefeld) seeing fewer.

Borussia Dortmund Vs Union Berlin – Key Facts:

  • The home side has prevailed in all four Bundesliga meetings between these teams, with Borussia Dortmund prevailing 5-0 and 2-0 as hosts in 2019-20 and 2020-21.
  • All four of Dortmund’s league games in 2021-22 have seen three or more goals and both teams score, winning three – including both home games – and losing the other.
  • FSV Mainz and Arminia Bielefeld games are the only ones to have produced fewer goals per game this season than that of Union Berlin, who are unbeaten so far (W1 D3).

With Dortmund granted an additional 24 hours recuperation, the onus will be on the home side to set a ferocious pace from the outset, which is something they’ve not been able to achieve lately. Six of their last seven goals have come after the break. Union Berlin are the early draw specialists meanwhile, conceding just four so far. So it may take some time before the visitors resistance is ultimately broken.
