Dundee United Preview – Can United return to league action within just their second home win of the campaign?

Micky Mellon came under pressure for the first time since taking over at Dundee United when his team went down 1-0 at home to Peterhead in the League Cup last week. It was a timid performance in a fixture where they should have had too much. His team bounced back with a win over non-league Kelty Hearts in midweek but even that performance was underwhelming.

The big issues for United has been their lack of firepower and that’s evidenced by the fact they have only scored more than one goal in two of their 10 league games to date. The signing of Mark McNulty on loan is a clear attempt to improve that but he and Lawrence Shankland will need service.

After a disastrous start to the season which seen games cancelled due to breaches of their bubble and losing their opening game of the campaign, Aberdeen are looking ominous again in the battle for third spot. Derek McInnes’ team are in fourth at the moment but they are only two points behind Hibs and have played two games less. The international break will also have given them time to get a couple of injured players back.

The Dons went into that break on the back of beating St Mirren courtesy of a last-minute winner and will be eager to pick up where they left off.

There’s only one team who have not dropped points away from home and that happens to be Aberdeen. They’ve won all three games and are yet to concede a goal. That sort of record should be no surprise considering how well organised Aberdeen have been under this coaching staff. They’re now developing a greater attacking threat and that makes them a threat to any other team in the league.

With Celtic at home looming on Aberdeen’s horizon, they will be desperate to get a win here and then at home to Hamilton next time out to go into that match full of confidence.
