Dundee Preview – Can Dundee build on positive weekend performance as they look to move off bottom spot?

Mark McGhee was the surprising choice to take over from James McPake as Dundee manager last week. The change in manager itself came as something of a surprise despite the Dens Park club being bottom of the table, but the selection to replace him was the biggest shock. It is McGhee’s first role as a permanent head coach since he left Barnet in 2018. His last role in Scotland was as boss of Motherwell the year previous.

McGhee’s first game in charge seen them travel to leaders Celtic and despite troubling their hosts and holding their own for long periods, Dundee eventually went down 3-2 to remain bottom of the division.

7/4
(odds taken 2000 GMT, Thursday 17 February)

The gap between themselves and second bottom St Johnstone is two points but this is Dundee’s game in hand. A win here would not only see them move out the automatic relegation place but also bring Ross County back into the conversation – they’re currently six behind that rival.

You have to go back to the 1st of December for the last time Dundee won a game at Dens Park. That was against St Johnstone, they have since taken only a point from their next three and scored only one goal in the process. McGhee will be hoping to improve on both those aspects in his first home match in charge.

St Mirren Preview – Will Robinson making it a winning return to Scottish football as Buddies chase top six?

St Mirren are the latest Scottish Premiership team to appoint a new manager. Jim Goodwin’s move to Aberdeen last week created the vacancy in Paisley which has been filled by another former Motherwell manager in the shape of Stephen Robinson. Robinson arrives from Morecambe where he had been in charge since the start of this season. He switches from trying to keep a club in the division to attempting to lead his new employers into the top six for the first time.

St Mirren are in excellent form with Saturday’s 1-1 draw away to Livingston extending their unbeaten run to eight in all competitions, winning six of those.

St Mirren are currently in seventh place but a win here would see them move into fourth spot, leapfrogging Motherwell, Aberdeen and Hibernian. That is how competitive the race for the top six and potentially European qualification is this season.

No team has drawn more games than the Buddies in the Premiership this season. Saturday’s share of the points was their 12th already, that’s three more than any other team. It also ended a run of three straight away wins but they will hope to return to that level of form starting with this one.

Dundee vs St Mirren Betting Advice

The need for points is obvious for both teams. Dundee want to get off bottom spot as soon as they can whilst St Mirren’s desire for a first ever top six finish and potentially fourth place which would bring European football is very much a realistic objective.

Saints not only bring the better form into the game but they have performed well in this fixture in recent years. Dundee did get the better of them in the last fixture in Paisley but their last win at Dens against St Mirren was nine years ago.

Key Facts –  Dundee vs St Mirren Betting Tip

  • Mark McGhee’s first game in charge of Dundee ended in a 3-2 defeat away to Celtic
  • St Mirren are unbeaten in their last eight games, winning six of them
  • Dundee’s last home win against St Mirren was back in 2013 (three losses and two draws since)

With a draw not really of any real value for either team considering their respective positions I expect this to be a game where both go for the three points. Both teams to score has won in eight of the last 10 meetings between the teams and it is a good bet once again.
